A farmer who suffered a gunshot wound to the face has become the recipient of the world’s first full facial transplant.

Surgeons in Spain say they have carried out the most extensive surgery yet to restore the appearance of a man who has been unable to eat, speak or breathe normally for at least five years.

The operation carried out in Barcelona, is understood to be the first time an entire face — including the skin, muscles, teeth, lips, cheekbones and jaw — has been transplanted and reconstructed, using tissue from a brain-dead donor.

In a 24-hour procedure at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, a team of 30 surgeons, anaesthetists nurses and transplant specialists replaced all parts of a patient’s face apart from his eyeballs and tongue.
