Looked at the best (in my opinion) four 'owned' songs in English football. West Ham, Leeds, Birmingham and Liverpool. All good and heard Leeds only too close for most of the game recently. But as we know, we have a song ourselves, usually only starts when it finishes. Ready for hell on this but maybe a slight change of lyrics might make it happen.

Now is the time for marching
Now let our hearts be gay
Sing for the mighty Brighton
Si..ing for Gus Poyet

So let our voices ring my boys
It's always us not me

And we'll sing you a song as we march along
For Sussex by the Sea

We're the men from Sussex
Sussex by Sea
We lost our ground to Archers pound
But faithful fans are we

So when you see the Brighton
Whoever you may be
You may tell them all that we stand and fall
For Sussex by the sea

I think it works, but please feel free to tell me otherwise.

I think that is a very worthy attempt, but I still prefer the original. Good effort though especially the second verse.

Although many if not most of the posters on NSC seem to prefer the original I think the only way 20,000 people are going to make the effort to learn and sing the whole thing is if the verses are updated - the language and sentiments are of a bygone era and just simply too old fashioned for the vast majority. It needs to be updated and then 20,000 copies of it need to be given out with programmes or put on seats + the words should be trailed at the right pace on the tv screens and then you'll get 20,000 people knowing it and singing it. Imo!!!

Very good. I like the traditional aspect of GOSBT but think you've done well with your version.

Like this bit especially.

Infact, are there any songs celebrating our surviving of A***** and co? If not there should be. Even if it's just past tenses, 'We built a bonfire, built a bonfire....'

I should have added that I really like brixtonA23's version - the only thing I might change is:

So let your voices ring my boys
and make some f**king noise
and we'll sing a song as we march along
for Sussex by the Sea

appreciate that the use of the f-word won't be to everyones taste but I like it!!

I'm totally opposed to updating the traditional words. The language and sentiments are of a bygone era - but so what? You could equally say the same of Shakespeare, but that doesn't stop people from learning and repeating whole chunks of it. Shakespeare is part of English history and culture the same way as GOSBTS is part of Sussex's history and culture.

Besides NO ONE is going to agree on what the updated lyrics should be. No matter what is written people will pick holes in it and any version that is officially adopted will only please a tiny percentage. Some (like me) won't accept any bowlderised version and will continue to sing the original words. The offering by the OP for example is no good because it attempts to rhyme 'Poyet' with 'Gay', and also it will need re-writing again whenever Poyet leaves and so the whole binfest will start again. To his credit though he's kept the word 'Gay' in, I'm sure some people would like to see that removed for a variety of reasons - all of them wrong.

This merely serves to underline my point!!!

Yes stick to the original it will eventually catch on we need to all be 'singing from the same hymn sheet'

Eh? How do you work that out? I'd say it was direct refutation of your point, namely you're in favour of modernising the lyrics and I'm not. Or to put it another way GOSBTS already has lyrics, therefore no more need to be written. Just learn the ones we've got.

This was in know way was an attempt to change a traditional work, even though I have seen enough threads discussing lyrics to make it pointless to pontificate. The thought was that very few teams have a song that is true to the club. We don't utilize ours because nobody connects with the lyrics. To introduce more memorable lines will continue the songs existence and prominence. Plus it's basically an orchestral work for the military. Plus song chants at football grow organically so whatever version gets taken up will change over time. So I am anticipating that even traditionalists will be able to sing more than the chorus.

Credit to whoever has put the new arrangement of the 'entry on to the field' tune together - it completely re-writes the original, and misses a whole eight lines (the "For we're the men from Sussex" bit) - but it suits Albion fans' understanding of how GOSBTS should be sung - with "And we're going up ..." fast-tracked forward.

If the words are going to be re-written as well, we need to decide first what version of the tune to use. BrixtonA23 has restored "For we're the men ...", so his version obviously won't fit the version of the tune that is now played at the Amex.

Incidentally ... Who did re-arrange the tune? They've done a cracking job, in my opinion, to get something that works as well as it does.

I agree that chants grow organically, but even if I accept that 'nobody connects with the lyrics' the question remains - why should we sing your version? As you've pointed out there have been dozens of 're-write' attempts on here in the last few months alone, ranging from quite good to excerable.

I was trying to keep the essence of the song but break it down whereby the first part is overly traditional, the latter introduces a new line which is emotive. Baby steps maybe and my version will never be the one, but at least it's trying to answer the one line question.

Norman Wisdom's version which was printed in the programme in the 60's,and famously performed on the pitch by the little maestro, changed the traditional GOSBTS for ever.Since then,we've been from Hove by Jove, ever fair and never swearing, going up and winning the cuppers.

So,yes,it's possible to change the lyrics and the pace whilst retaining the tune. It's just getting a version to agree on from somebody with the Wisdomesque stature to carry it off.

Oh,and does anyone else remember that you can tell by the smell that it stinks like hell in....................

I'm all for singing the original, not an update, especially when 'gay' and 'Poyet' don't actually rhyme. Nothing wrong with the original, it's ours and should be cherished as such.

BTW - nice to hear SBTS sung at a variation of Motorhead-style speeds at Watford on Tuesday.

Not.
