Of course it is well documented that our premiership counterparts can get £100k+ per week but I haven't really heard too much about the lower league wage bills. Any one got any ideas what they get paid ??

Youth contracts about 45/55 quid.
Back-up ranging from 150/450 quid.
Rotational (like on the benches) anf rist team ranging around 1200/800 quid id say
then the top top players 2-5 with bonuses i guess

Woah..Thats not bad going actually... I guess the only thing is that its not enough to be able to just retire at 36 or so... Guess they may get into coaching or just regular jobs ??

I guess 4-5k a week, if sensibly invested, could set them up...

I read in a paper, post Man city that Adam Virgo is our highest paid player earning approx £160,000 a year which equates to about 3000 a week!

Makes you wonder how much top players in this division must be earning! (No offence Adam)

I heard that we "bust the bank" for Roberts and paid him £6K a week

Oh and I believe Virgs was on £13k a week at Celtic.

I find it hard to believe we are paying Virgo 160k a year.

Well, that said and from what I've seen, I might buy myself a pair of boots, join a gym and go 5 times a week, practice a bit of football with my nephews (they're very good!!!) then try out for the team... I think I might be in for a chance!!! Whats Dick Knights mobile no?? Ha!

From a survey of the players two years ago (published in the Independent)

League One

Age 19-20 £18,950
Age 21-22 £52,000
Age 23-24 £61,650
Age 25-26 £67,600
Age 27-28 £71,750
Age 29-30 £69,300
Age 31-32 £87,000
Age 33+ £72,000
Average £67,850

They interviewed enough players (they claim) to get a good statistical representation. You'd have to read the article, but the average isn't skewed by a ridiculous high wage.

I would doubt we are paying anyone more than 3k a week although they can add win bonuses to that.

So no more than 3k a week then.

Virgs is worth every penny of that 160k and when he does start in goal i would imagine that will be upped to 170k

Make that 'too much.'

I wouldn't say a League One professional footballer earns too much. Premier League, absolutely, it is hugely distorted but most League One players are just earning a good wage for a job that entertains millions to a degree by which they are willing to shell out £500+ a year on watching them play.

It is going back a few years, I know, but when Barry LLoyd was manager we wanted a goalkeeper as back up and Gareth Howells (David Howells of Spurs, brother) who had played for Torquay before going to South Africa was approached and offered £120 per week to just turn up for games as a sub goalkeeper. At the time he drove a lorry for Royal Mail and played for St Albans so he couldnt afford to take up the offer as it would have meant a drastic drop in wages.

My sister for one of her many sins is an estate agent based down in the marina. She was approached in the summer by one of our new signings (who I won't name as I wouldn't want my salary plastered over the internet) to find a rental property for said player. He declared his annual earnings around the six figure mark. Assume this probably includes win bonuses as well so maybe it's not quite that high this season!!

Anyway he lived in the gaff she found for two weeks, decided he didn't like it and moved out. Gave up his deposit without much of a row so clearly not short of a bob or two.
