Maconie does - or at least, did - turn up on a few too many list shows than good for his reputation. But he knows his music, and is a top presenter - his banter with Mark Radcliffe on late-night Radio 2 a few weeks ago was a joy to hear.

Radio 2 has some good presenters but it is unlistenable on weekday mornings.
