A dad who drove his motorbike at 122mph, with his son riding on the back, has been jailed for six months.

Motorcyclist Robert Bennett was caught speeding on police camera

Robert Bennett, 47, was caught by a police camera on the A361 North Devon link road with his boy perched on his 1300cc Suzuki.

The cleaning supervisor, from Barnstaple, Devon was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court, where he was also told he was banned from the road for 18 months.

Speeding At 122mph

Reporting from the court, Sky's Katie Stallard said Judge Philip Wassall had handed out a custodial sentence in the hope it would send a clear message about the gravity of the offence.

"Setting aside the position of having your son on the back, there is a steady stream of traffic coming the other way, the road is wet, had you lost control, it would have become a missile.

"The potential consequences of which would have been a certain serious accident and at least highly possibly the death of at least one other road user."

He continued: "If you add to that the fact you had your son on the back, the level of lack of responsibility is almost unbelievable.

"The matter is so serious, the custodial sentence can't be avoided."

Bennett, who was divorced from the boy's mother, had just picked his son up from his mother's for a visit in April last year when he was caught speeding.

A police officer sitting in a van activated his camera when he heard the bike accelerating towards a bend.

The device clocked the speed and also picked up an image of his son, who was not wearing protective trousers or gloves, clutching the back of the seat with his bare hands.

Bennett's barrister David Sapiecha said his client had ridden at that speed for no more than half a mile on the 60mph two lane carriageway.

The court heard he had expressed regret when in a police interview he was told how fast he had been going.

Hmmmmmmmm seems rather odd that he got that sentence, yet in another part of the same country a nigerian driver doing 64mph in a 30mph zone with no tax insurance or licence who ran down a 79 year old woman on a zebra crossing pretty much got away with it as he said he did not know what a zebra crossing was! ? so the judge called him a nawty boy and fined hime £450 and endorsed his non existant licence with 6 points.

Thankfully the pensioner was poor and couldnt afford to contest or sue,did nobody think to say to the nigerian are you telling me you have never seen a zebra crossing the road ?

Pretty much my thinking,
There are too many double standards in UK

and how long did the truck driver get in North Wales recently for wiping out a family of 6?

There is no consistency in the UK justice system.

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham was locked up for 12 weeks recently for killing someone whilst using his phone..
This was an actual death that occurred.

But this guy was locked up for 6 months because he could have killed someone

As said before there is no consistency in the UK justice system.

People should be allowed to use whatever speed if conditions allow it and they have had advanced training. :jester:

So what happens when they meet the driver who hasn't had advanced training pulling out of a junction? You my son are an idiot.

I think it was a wind up - there was a thread about 6 months ago on the same subject and a few NSC'ers believed that there should be different categories of licenca, with different speed restriction. I think BoF was taking the iss out of the few stupid posters on that particular thread.

Watchin the boats go by
Riding a motorbike at that speed with a child on the back is insane and has rightly been punished with a prison sentance.

The other examples are clearly the ones that shouldn't be the case. So many people get such lenient sentances for instances on the road it's unbelievable, especially as the earlier poster quotes the foreign drivers who shouldn't even be driving here in the first place.

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
Seems a bit harsh.

Didnt some Albanian Junkie (not playing any race card BTW) pull a knife on someone on a bus in Hove recently and get off with a suspended sentance?

Odd

Those cameras are wrong most of teh time anyway.
Police said they had a man doing 94mph and then he proved his car can only do 87mph.
