Just sign up and start following people, they will follow you back and they will be able to see your tweets.

Are your followers notified that you have posted a tweet.

Thanks. Do you just post a tweet and wait for people to read it or do you send it to your followers?

Either. You can send a normal tweet? By just sending it, which all of your followers will see (if you have no followers no one will see it) or you can mention somebody in your tweet. For example, say you wanted to tweet CMS and tell him how well he played, you'd put "@12CMS12 well played last night Craig" then he would see that despite not following you

If you post a status on facebook, only your friends can see it.
If you send a tweet on twitter, only your followers can see it. Unlike facebook, following can be a one-way thing.
So if you follow Mackail-Smith (@12CMS12), when he tweets, they will be shown on your feed, but he won't see when you tweet unless you're privileged enough for him to decide to follow you

It's completely free and you can tweet 'til your heart's content.

The @ symbol is used to send messages to other users (or just click the 'reply' button under one of their tweets).
Retweeting (or RT'ing) is used when you see a tweet and want to share it with your followers, ie, if Paul Hazlewood the club photographer (bhaSnappy) tweets a picture of the East stand or whatever.

Oh, and 'hashtags' are used to link tweets of the same category, like #bhafc. You can just click on the hashtag and you'll be able to see all the recent or most popular tweets containing that tag. They can also be used in a sarcastic way, you'll soon pick that up.

It's the sort of thing that is a lot easier to learn as you use it as opposed to others explaining it. Set up a free twitter account and you will set a name then we can follow you and talk to you and show you how it works
