As for reading on the iPad, it's perfectly fine until you find yourself in a sunny place, you really need to be in the shade to avoid having to squint to read it or even be able to read it at all.

No you don't. You go to Amazon on your iPad, you browse, you select your book, you download it and it appears on your iPad. No iTunes required.
