Very off topic I know but...

A couple I weeks ago a close friend was killed in a motor cycle accident in Kazakstan. He was on a solo charity motor bike ride from Addingham to Mongolia.
His mother rung me to ask if I knew who he was insured with for the bike, but I don't know.
His body is being repatriated tonight through his travel insurance etc.

Anyone got any ideas on how to find out who he was insured with? I had his reg plate for the bike.

Thanks all for any ideas.

Sorry to hear that, I would guess the DVLA would know but would probably only give the information after seeing the death certificiate.

Under the Police Box
The Motor Insurers' Database (MID) is what the Police use to track the insurer of each vehicle.

However, this isn't publically available information, so I'd suggest the guy's Bank is the best place for mum to look. If there's a direct debit or a one-off payment, it will show and should be much easier to trace than trying to get through the data protection laws associated with MID.

The bad news would be, if its anything other than a specialist syndicate at Lloyds, the cover for use abroad is usually limited to "minimum legal requirement", ie just enough to cover the liability of hitting someone else - they'll probably be no cover for the bike, no personal accident cover and no death benefit. This will be different if he took out a specialist policy, but if he had a travel policy, then I'd guess he wouldn't have doubled up with the bike insurance.

Hopefully this will help

"The date of the accident and the registration details of the other vehicle are required to search on askMID. If the registration is found on the MID, you will receive on screen the insurance details: policy number, name of insurer and the claims contact details to help you progress a claim."

Hi all, just an update. Thanks for all your help. A mate of a mate of a mate managed to get the details through their work (insurance). I've passed this onto my mates mum and she will be making contact with them tomorrow or Monday.
