GLENN HODDLE ended one of the longest transfer chases last night when Tottenham Hotspur agreed a fee, believed to be in the region of £2 million, for Bobby Zamora, the Brighton & Hove Albion striker. The Tottenham manager has spent much of the past two seasons watching the 22-year-old, who has scored 70 league goals in the past three campaigns.
Zamora, whose contract with Brighton is due to expire in 2006, passed a medical yesterday and was discussing personal terms with Tottenham last night. Brighton will have to pay Bristol Rovers 20 per cent of the profit on the deal as part of the sell-on clause negotiated when he joined them for £100,000 three years ago.
His arrival, a month after Tottenham signed Helder Manuel Marques Postiga, the 20-year-old forward, from FC Porto, provides a much-needed injection of youth into what was an ageing squad. Teddy Sheringham has been released and Darren Anderton and Steffen Iversen are expected to follow, with the Norway forward talking to Wolverhampton Wanderers about a loan move.
