Hip hop past and present

Over there
After last nights hip hop at the B.B.C programme, and beach huts thread about it. I was wondering who else loves rap and what should I be listening to now after losing touch these last 10 years. I was hugely into the whole hip hop culture through the 80's and 90's and listened to everything from grandmaster flash to Run D.M.C to public enemy to Eric B and Rakim, Wu Tang, onyx, Gangstar, Biggie, 2pac, Redman and everything else in-between. I slightly fell out of love with the genre partly due to age but mainly cos of the guns, bitches and bling culture. But I've got a fresh taste for it the last couple of years mainly due to Dan le sac and scrobius pip (genius British hip hop)
So what else should I be listening to now? no dance music please, gold with Falmer :)

MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Souls of Mischief - '93 Til Infinity
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control

Are among my favourite hip-hop records. I'm in it for the sampling/skits mainly and they all deliver.

A child is born with no state of mind
Blind to the ways of mankind
God is smiling on you but he's frowning too
Because only God knows what you’ll go through
You’ll grow in the ghetto, living second rate
And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate
The places you play and where you stay
Looks like one great big alley way
You'll admire all the number book takers
Thugs, pimps, pushers and the big money makers
Driving big cars, spending twenties and tens
And you wanna grow up to be just like them, huh,
Smugglers, scramblers, burglars, gamblers
Pickpockets, peddlers even panhandlers
You say: “I'm cool, I'm no fool!”
But then you wind up dropping out of high school
Now you're unemployed, all non-void
Walking ‘round like you're Pretty Boy Floyd
Turned stickup kid, look what you’ve done did
Got sent up for a eight year bid
Now your manhood is took and you're a Maytag
Spent the next two years as a undercover fag
Being used and abused to serve like hell
'Til one day you was found hung dead in your cell
It was plain to see that your life was lost
You was cold and your body swung back and forth
But now your eyes sing the sad, sad song
Of how you lived so fast and died so young

One of the all-time great verses.

You singers are spineless, as you sing your senseless songs to the mindless. Your general subject love is minimal. It's sex for profit. - public Enemy
Gimme the pussy the money the mic and I'm straight. - N.W.A

He isn't to every bodies taste but I think he is superb.

Think a fusion of eminem and the streets.

Roots Manuva has some superb albums too if you like British. Plus my brother in law swears by Abdominal so try him too.

Now don't step out when you're close to the edge
Or you may find that you'll lose your head

When you're out on the street
Trying to cross the road
You gotta try to remember the Green Cross Code

Bloody hell, very thorough :) given me loads to work on there. Have listened to thug life, ghost face, de la, roots manuva and a few others in your list but will defo check others out, thanx. I'm loving scroobius pip alot but used to be hugely into British hip hop scene. The likes of ruthless rap assassins, blade, hijack, demon boyz, and the incredible Gunshot. Any one heard of these ?

No worries, killed some time this morning.

I've got Mark B & Blade's album, but haven't listened to any of Blade's solo stuff. I also have Gunshot's second album (which doesn't want to play on most of my players!!), but missed out on their classic debut!

Just been listening to Ruthless Rap Assassins on spotify, it's pretty good, reminds me of the good old days when I was first getting into hip hop. I missed out on the others on your list.

Edit - Just found some Hijack to listen to on Myspace.. Didn't some of them go on to become a dodgy pop band (This dodgy pop band? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpx7IWPda8A)

You might also like London Posse, Silver Bullet, Marxman & Brotherhood from back in day.

A few other UK names that are still going:
Task Force, Asaviour, Foreign Beggers, Funky DL, Numbskullz, New Flesh 4 Old (bit hit & miss),

Also, if you can find it, there was a Brighton group called "First Down" (album was called World Service), one of the group is the graffiti artist Aroe, but I never managed to get my hands on it due to a lack of funds when I was younger, so no idea how good it is. (bit more info on them here - First Down – Free listening, concerts, stats, pictures at Last.fm)

There was also Dett Work South East by Blak Twang, not sure this was ever released, but every single that came out was very good, unlike the majority of his future releases. (let me know if you manage to find either of these last two??)

Edit - If you go on Spotify, click on related artists to discover similar artists.
