I need some help and advice. I am not an alcoholic. HOwever after anything more than 6-8 pints (usually Kronenberg or Stella) in the bar outside my office I suffer from complete memory loss.

I think this has been happening only over the last few months. It ranges from s Thuesday or Wednesday night when I have a few, especially in this weather, to an anbsolute skinful on a Thursday and Friday (sometimes).

It was all brought home to me the other day when a quite attractive girl was chatting to me in the bar and said, "Oh yes and I remember you said blah blah last night and you talked about....... The details aren't important but the fact was that Ihad only had a few, was not pissed or out of order or lairy, but had no recollection of the conversation I had had with her.

What the hell is going on? Am I alone on this one??

Stop drinking. Seriously. You're probably drinking more than you think you are anyway so cut down to one or two pints and intersperse them with shandies. Tell your friends and workmates you're cutting down. See if that improves things, if nothing else you'll certainly have more money.

how about drinking weaker largers? Or saying to your mates gonna just drink coke tonight lads. It may make you look a little wierd (too some anyway), but if it saves your life then it mightbe worth it.

"I'm not an alcoholic. However...."

A truly classic line. Stop drinking stella and move onto Fosters or Carling. That extra 1.5% seems to make a whole world of difference for me. I also have started to get the memory loss thing which I never used to have and I hate it.

All that extra 1% means is you can drink more and go to the loo more.

I drink grapefruit juice and springwater. Two mixers of grapefruit in a pint glass topped up with Perrier or equivalent. The problem is it can be REALLY expensive (although you can use soda water instead). All soft drinks are over-priced in pubs, especially when you consider most of them are just water with a squirt of syrup.

If you're not an alcoholic, try going 2 weeks without a drink - at all. See what you're like after a few days.

An alcoholic does not have to get rat arsed all the time, just the need to drink a reasonable valume regularly is enough.

Alternatively, try to stop after 2 pints and drink soft drinks, or start with them and finish off with a couple of pints.

If you're drinking 6 - 8 pints several times per week, you are doing yourself damage my friend. I think the safe weekly limit is something like 20 units (about 10 pints), but that will depend on the alcohol content : it will be less pints for Stella.

One last point, do you drink to socialise or get drunk? If it's to socialise, why not drink weaker lagers or shandies? If it's the later, then you may want to question your first statement.

I work with a bloke in his 30s who can put his beer away and is a bit of a boy, but he bores you shiteless because his memory is so alcohol addled that he repeats the same stories, and you just look at him and think "do you not honestly remember telling us all that a few weeks back?" Without being rude you just look at him and say "yeah, I remember you saying" to try and shut him up.

That's a good point. You may think you need to drink loads to be "one of the lads" but in actual fact they may well all prefer it if you cut down a bit.

I always think that:
First few lagers - thirst quenching
Next few lagers - because you're too pissed to say no or switch to soft drinks

Maybe say to your mates that you're just having a few pints of juice/water/Coke first to quench your thirst? Then switch to lager and you'll probably find that you can drink it a bit more slowly and sensibly.

This thread feels like one of those Agony Aunt columns. Just needs someone to say "Phone my advice line for tips on how to cut down your alcohol intake"
