I've just got back from hols up north and was in Chester on Monday and picked up the Chester Evening Leader which had the following never to be seen again this season headline " Brighton perfect the art of finishing! By the way it also highlighted the 'clumsy' goalkeeping of FMD. Any other headlines we are not going to see this season? Let me start with:- "Albion win at Withdean!!" :yahoo:

You mean this one....

Brighton perfect the art of finishing

CITY were taught a lesson in finishing after drawing a blank for the first time in their pre-season warm-up games.

The Blues' passing and movement looked good and they never deserved to be on the receiving end of a 4-0 defeat, but when they reached the final third they lacked that vital cutting edge demonstrated by their League One visitors.

Chester manager Bobby Williamson was far from downbeat in his post-match interview as he had received answers to questions he was posing for his team selection.

And he believed the defeat would hopefully work in his team's favour, and Blues fans would rethink their high expectations for the opening day of the new season against Chesterfield.

Williamson named five of his new signings in the starting line-up against Brighton.

Goalkeeper Gavin Ward wore the number one jersey ahead of John Danby who had picked up an injury, while Paul Butler secured a centre half role, and Richie Partridge and Kevin Ellison played as wingers, and John Murphy started in attack.

Chester showed a few promising signs during the early exchanges as Ellison raced clear of his marker on the left flank and whipped in a low menacing cross which was eventually cleared.

And Partridge illustrated an ability to escape his marker seconds later on the right wing when he wriggled his way clear and hoisted a dangerous centre which visiting keeper Michel Kuipers held.

Brighton produced their first meaningful attacking manouevre in the 29th minute when Tommy Fraser released Alex Revell on the right edge of the box and a squared pass picked out Nicky Forster whose low goalbound strike was held at full stretch by Ward.

Dean Hammond maintained the visitors' pressure in the 35th minute when he saw a goalbound header blocked by Butler.

But Brighton did manage to break the deadlock two minutes later when Forster outfoxed both Paul Linwood and Laurence Wilson on the right edge of the box and squared for Revell who had time to control the pass before rifling his effort low beyond Ward.

Dean Cox could have doubled Brighton's advantage a minute later, but his 22 yard drive flew over the City bar.

And Revell could have wrapped up a positive half from the South coast club three minutes before the break, but he screwed an 18 yard goalscoring opportunity wide of the mark following a powerful run from Forster.

Williamson decided to make three changes before the resumption, replacing his two centre halves, Butler and Linwood, with Ashley Westwood and Phil Bolland, and opting to switch Chris Holroyd for striker Nathan Lowndes.

New signing Lowndes made an immediate impact when he released Ellison with a pinpoint throughball, but the former Tranmere winger's low angled strike from the left edge of the six yard box was saved by Kuipers' feet.

Chester so nearly profited from a clumsy piece of goalkeeping from Kuipers in the 53rd minute. The Brighton keeper's touch on the edge of his own box nearly ran into Murphy's path, but Kuipers recovered the situation before having to escape another poor touch which nearly found Lowndes.
Ellison looked eager to take a City free kick 22 yards from the visitors goal in the 57th minute, but his curling left-footed attempt flew over the bar.

Murphy looked annoyed with himself after nodding an inch perfect Partridge cross over the bar at the back post in the 61st minute.

Tony Grant's quick thinking was so nearly rewarded in the 67th minute, his quick free kick for Lowndes was cut out by the Brighton defence who did well to respond to the situation.

And Ellison produced City's final goalbound effort of the match a minute later, but his shot was well blocked by Guy Butters.

Brighton were 2-0 in front in the 77th minute when a move initiated by Hammond and Forster was finished by Revell who slipped the ball beyond Ward and into the bottom right corner.

Andrew Whing created Brighton's third goal with a long pass for Forster who beat substitute Simon Marples with his pace and drilled a low shot from the left edge of the box to beat Ward and find the bottom right corner of the net.

And Brighton capitalised when they were awarded an 87th minute penalty after Bolland was adjudged to have brought down Hammond.

Hammond dusted himself down and sent Ward the wrong way with his spotkick.

CHESTER CITY: Ward; Vaughan (Sandwith 74), Butler (Bolland 45), Linwood (Westwood 45), Wilson; Ellison (Marples 74), Hand (Hughes 55), Grant, Partridge; Holroyd (Lowndes 45), Murphy (Yeo 62).

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION: Kuipers; Whing, Mayo (Rents 51), El-Abd, Lynch (Elphick 87); Butters, Cox, Revell, Hammond; Fraser (Reid 77), Forster.

REFEREE: Anthony Taylor (Greater Manchester).
