Harding on Moyes January wish list Dec 17 2004

By Andy Hunter, Daily Post

DAVID MOYES has resolved to spend a slice of his January transfer budget on Brighton's highly-rated left-back Dan Harding.

Harding, an England under-21 international, has been linked with a move to Goodison Park for several months after rejecting a new contract offer at the Withdean Stadium.

And Everton are understood to have now moved ahead of several rivals for Harding's signature with a view to completing a deal worth around £750,000 in the transfer window.

Glasgow Rangers and Cardiff City are also interested in the fullback, who celebrates his 21st birthday next Thursday. But Harding would prefer a move to the Premiership high-flyers and is attracted by Moyes's plans to develop a young, successful team at Goodison Park.

Moyes's interest in Harding would cast doubt on the long-term future of Alessandro Pistone, who is out of contract at the end of this season and yet to be offered an extension.

However, with Gary Naysmith rejecting Everton's offer of a new two-year deal and linked with an Old Firm move in January, the inform Italian could be retained to help nurture Harding if he makes the step up.

Brighton are loath to lose their Academy product but would receive only a nominal compensation fee for his development if they opted to keep him until the end of the season.

Manager Mark McGhee admitted recently: "We know there is interest there from a number of clubs and we are trying very hard indeed to secure him on a longer contract at Brighton.

"Unfortunately, Daniel isn't keen to do that at this stage and that might well mean we have to sell him in January."

£750k? That's obscene. We should hold out for at least £4m. The lad's the most exciting prospect in the country after Wayne Rooney.

Are moyes or his scouting on halloucigenic drugs when they watch Dan play?

I remember everton offering a load for Bobby Dazzler (£3mill) and DK holding out for a bigger deal. Lets learn by our previous mistakes and sell the boy now before he is sussed out.

Ill take that. That would be the end of the money troubles for this season pretty much. And if there is competition from a number of clubs that can only serve to push the price up even more!

Is there any way we can get the Sky Sports footage of the last 3 goals we've conceded DESTROYED in some way ? It could severely jeopardise the deal.

Big  to Peter Taylor. Did he know what he was doing when he picked Dan for England U21? If so he is a hero.

Yes Dan has great potential and has had some cracking games for us (and some cacking games of course) but £750k?

All this proves is that perhaps Harding's agent can call in favours from journalists all over the place!

I think its all cobblers stirred up by his agent to up the ante during contract talks. If we take such stories at face value then how clever is MM when he publicly slags off Harding for recent performances. Don't forget that MM will have football connections and he would not be stupid enough to devalue Harding via public slaggings if there was the merest hint of a genuine offer of that magnitude.

The facts are that Hardings mistakes are costing us goals that we can ill afford. He needs to be dropped to the reserves to regain confidence and learn how to do the simple things like mantaining concentration.

The witch hunt of Harding was inevitable but can only be justified fully if it can be proved that Dan has had his head turned by experiences in the U21 camp and the cash they might be earning.

In the interim get the Ginger Prince back in!
