Poyet: British players are unrealistically priced... until that changes I'm shopping abroad
Brighton manager Gus Poyet insisted young English players are grossly over-priced and that he will continue to look abroad when bringing in young talent to support the club's promotion drive.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's FA Cup tie against Arsenal, Poyet called for British clubs to steep themselves in reality when they try to sell on their most promising youngsters.
Poyet said: 'It doesn't matter if you are from around the corner or from the other side of the world. What is a matter for England is how expensive the English players are. There are British players who have done nothing in football, yet they cost millions.
'Until we become realistic in the price of British players then those teams who want to play in a different way and want intelligent, quality players will have to go abroad. It’s simple. There are no two ways.
‘I see the prices you have to pay for some players and it’s scary. I’m looking for the best players and it doesn’t matter where they come from.
‘The problem is that when you want a specific kind of player for a specific position and you want to get that player and he costs you £7million, £8m, £10m, £12m, then you need to go abroad.
'Another problem is that there are not many British players. The academies need to create more. The more you create, the price goes down. It’s like any product. In a year’s time at Brighton we’re going to have a new training ground, so we’re going to make players.
'It’s going to take at least five, six, seven years and we cannot start with the players that are 18 and 19 now. 'But the ones who are under 14 and under 15 are brighter and I can tell you that in five years’ time, you will see Brighton with plenty of British players from the academy.’
