To be honest it has always been a left wing paper and New Labour aren't all that left wing so it stands to reason that they'd be more aligned with the Liberal Democrats these days

It has always been liberal with a small "l", but has come out for Labour for many years now. The hacks have a meeting a few days before the poll to decide who to back, rather than the editor just going with his own opinion.
