Gough U-turn over Yorkshire move

Darren Gough is to stay with Essex after a dramatic change of heart over his decision to join Yorkshire.

Gough had agreed a four-year deal to become captain and director of pro cricket at Headingley.

But the 36-year-old informed Yorkshire officials on Wednesday that he felt the combined role was too much at this stage of his career.

"We are shell-shocked by his decision to remain with Essex," said Yorkshire chief executive Stewart Regan.

"We offered him the chance to carry on with his playing career whilst providing the opportunity he desired to move into a managerial role.

"It is a big job, that is true, but Darren and our board felt that it was a challenge he was up to and it is very disappointing that he will now not be coming to Headingley Carnegie."

Gough made his decision only hours after meeting the rest of the players for the first time and outlining plans for the future.

"I appreciate his honesty in advising us of his decision before moving to the club," Regan added.

Yorkshire now face serious problems, having already relieved David Byas of first-team responsibilities to make way for Gough.
