Golf club recommendations?

I'm wanting to join a golf club. I'm thinking about Lewes or maybe Mid Sussex.
I live in Hurstpierpoint (moved here last year) - so am I missing any courses?
I want a welcoming club (not snobby), so I can play in some friendly meddles etc.

Thanks.

Mid Sussex is better known as Mud Sussex, Lewes is a bit below par. I would recomend Singing Hills and if not that then West Hove.

Thanks, I'll definitely check out West Hove, as I like the idea of playing whilst seeing the sea

Im not sure if you can see the sea from West Hove, as its in a bit of a dip, maybe a couple of holes at the top you can, but i think it is blocked out by a hill and Hangleton (view not as good as the sea)

Hassocks is pretty good to start with (wide fairways, not so many trees)
Tilgate is a tough one, as the fairways are really narrow and its in the middle of a forest pretty much

Hassocks
A downland course is obviously best for year round play as they have better drainage. Like others have said Hassocks, Mid Sussex etc just turn into swamps.
West Hove is nice but can get busy, Singing Hills has a good reputation, although I've never played there.

How soon is now?
Singing Hills has 3 lots of 9 and you basically play 2 of the 3. I've only played there once and it was a shitty day but the course was in excellent condition. From a green fee-ers perspective its good during the week, but pricey at the weekends. Not sure what the membership costs are..

I recommend the 5 iron. Good compromise between loft and distance.

Depends how much money you have to spend to be perfectly honest.

If you havent got much and you are abit of a beginner then Hassocks would be your best bet in my opinion as it caters for all levels of golfer and is only about £500 a year i think.

Lewes somebody said was below par...not in my opinion, the greens are always immaculate and the course is never as far as i am aware closed due to the course being on chalk. It is quite pricey if i remember rightly though, i play there 2 or 3 times a year as the father in law is a member, it gets windy but is a good challenge.
the views from up there are also excellent.

Have you looked into H/Heath golf Club ?....ive only ever had a couple of lessons there but it looks very nice indeed.

Theres a good CRAZY golf course on the seafront if you want to look at the sea at the same time!

Or you could just take a picture and take it round with you?

Forgot about Haywards Heath, now that is a top course.

Oh and there is an Albion link at H/Heath Golf Club as Gerry Ryans ex wife Simeone runs the Restuarant and Bar there.
The food is top notch.

The pros are also really good guys.

Definately worth checking out, being only 20 mins from Hurstpierpoint.

Well Haywards Heath is a nice course, quite snobby there though and a bit pricey.

Pyecombe will be very close to you and is a greta course which you can play even when it has been raining as it drains superbly on the chalk.

Singing Hills is good, like someone said there are 3 lots of nine and one of them is a little bit unintertesing just straight up and down holes.

Hassocks is really a beginners course, very wide fairways and short holes and can get very muddy.

Mid sussex always seems very welcoming, not sure about the mud as never played there in winter but in summer is a nice course.

The Dyke would be my other recomendation, great testing course and suerb views.

I used to play at The Dyke fairly often with a mate... as long as it's not in the clouds (which happens occasionally) or extremely windy, it is a great course. Greens were always good, being on chalk it is almost all well-drained, club house and food OK... speed of play seems generally OK, because it's too hilly for any really doddery old codgers or folk in buggies. You will have to get used to playing with the ball above or below your feet though, and a lot of sloping fairways!

I recommend the 5 iron. Good compromise between loft and distance.

I would use a Niblick by preference. Because it has an amusing name.

Avoid HH at all costs, it is snob central. Awful place.

You can't go wrong with Mid Sussex really. Decent people, decent prices and a decent course.

As a kid, I inherited some old golf clubs from my Dad (who had them given to him secondhand I think)... they included a MASHIE NIBLICK, with a worn out leather handle and bent hickory shaft... I wish I still had it, it was a thing of beauty :nono:
