It was the date when the Pope rounded up and killed the Knights Templar. The French king owed the Knights Templar loads of cash and didn't want to pay them back. The Pope was in his pocket and so did as he wished.

History of the Knights Templar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At dawn on Friday, October 13, 1307, scores of French Templars were simultaneously arrested by agents of King Philip, later to be tortured in locations such as the tower at Chinon, into admitting heresy in the Order.

Friday the 13th - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knights Templar were a monastic military order founded in Jerusalem in 1118 C.E., whose mission was to protect Christian pilgrims during the Crusades. Over the next two centuries, the Knights Templar became extraordinarily powerful and wealthy. Threatened by that power and eager to acquire their wealth, King Philip secretly ordered the mass arrest of all the Knights Templar in France on Friday, October 13, 1307 - Friday the 13th.[4]

Although, there are, of course, other theorys, which you can read on the wiki page. I like the Templar story. :)

It’s the biggest superstition in the States – with, allegedly, some 10 million affected. Some won’t go to work and some won’t go out at all. Paraskevidekatriaphobics is the technical term for them.

It was the day that former Manchester City midfielder Paul Lake declared himself as an evil overlord, head of the Zordan Galapticos tribe from the Far Eastern Galaxy.

Friday 13th August 1995.

He immediately declared war on the Jaxaleen Pappiaty tribe, lead by his chief nemesis David Howells (former Spurs midfielder). A bloody battle ensued, killing 7,329 men.

This is where it originates from.
