99% of the time the book is better than the film. However, there is the odd exception, where the film is actually better. I will start.

The Football Factory.

I'd say Brighton Rock.

It's a tough call as both film and book are excellent. What clinches it for me though is that the film has one of the greatest endings of any film, ever. FACT.

Got to be the Godfather

Mario Puzo is a piss poor author.

Truly awful.

Words can't express how bad an author he is, in fact.

It's a cinematic cliche that the better the book, the worse the film: look at the piss-poor attempts at filming Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Joyce, Proust, Dickens and many others.

There are great films made from OK or poor books though: The Postman Always Rings Twice, Little Caesar, Blade Runner and many more that I can't be arsed to think about right now.

I'd generally agree with that. All the great ideas that we know from the first 2 films were in the book, but they were threaded together pretty badly.
