What is everyone's favourite one line from a song?

Im undecided on mine, but would be one of the following:

- "hanging out their old love letters, on the line to dry" from Town Caller Malice. A wonderfully poignant line by Weller conjouring images of women stuck in loveless marriages having to hang their old love letters on the line to dry the tears they have shed on them whilst reading them and remembering the romantic ideals of their youth.

- "when something so good, just cant function no more, and love, love will tear us apart..again" from 'Love will tear us apart' by Joy Division. A beautiful beautiful way of illustrating how you feel at the end of a long relationship.

"shadapu yah face" Genius.

"I can feel the earth begin to move
I hear my needle hit the groove
And spiral through another day
I hear my song begin to say
Kiss me where the sun don't shine
The past was yours
But the future's mine
You're all out of time" - Quite simply the best intro to a song I have ever heard.

What you see is what you get
You've made your bed, you'd better lie in it
You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies wash you down and their promises rust
You'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns
And the public wants what the public gets
But I don't get what this society wants
I'm going underground.

Paul Weller in his pomp!

wherever the money is
To keep with today's gay themes it has to be from the Seahorses single love is the Law " so take me deep inside"and the line

Strap on Sally chased us down the alley, we feared for our behinds.

"Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight, two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude"

Weller is untouchable (nearly) lyrically.

No.

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his
only son
And how it's only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you" straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and
maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down

Bruce Springsteen:
"I'd sit on his lap in that big old Buick and steer as we drove through town,
He'd tousle my hair and say son take a good look around,
this is your hometown"

The Boss is a bloody great songwriter and that particular lyric reminds me of the time my old man sat me on his lap (steady) and letme steer his car around Buckingham Park when i was a nipper.

Superb stuff. My favourite line(s) would be:

"I see Liberals, I am just a fashion accessory
People send postcards, and they all hope I'm feeling well
I retreat into self-pity, it's so easy
Where they patronise my misery, La tristesse durera"

La Tristesse Durera by the MSP.

My favourite line is:

"I'd've crossed that river, just to be where you are"

from Bob Dylan's Mississippi, though it's probably his delivery that does it.

Same song, but

"I used to think that the day would never come that my life would depend on the morning sun"

Really means something at 5 AM when its starting to get bright and you've been working all night..

In a river the colour of lead
Immerse the baby's head
Wrap her up in the News Of The World
Dump-her-on-a-doorstep, girl

This night has opened my eyes
and I will never sleep again

You kicked and cried like a bullied child
A grown man of 25,
Oh, he said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will

Oh, save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone but the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy and I'm not sad

A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
She took away your troubles
Oh, but then again she left pain

Oh, please save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone but the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy and I'm not sad
