"Nothing too pretentious" in Rye?

I'm struggling to recommend anywhere that won't cost you a Third World Debt? Last time I checked the Menu Board of the Mermaid, it was groaning under the weight of the prices.

The only bargain I can think of - Being Thursday, its market day in Rye. The food wagon over by the car park fence does a fantastic sausage & chips for £1.20. Just have chips as the vegi option. That will impress 'her'. Better be quick though - He packs up around 2.30.

I would reccommend The George too. Stayed there last October, food was fantastic!
