Super-Close Google Maps Zooms
Posted by Arneh on Wednesday, Mar 7, 2007, 5:58 pm

It turns out that you can zoom in much more deeply onto Google Maps by doing this:

1. Select a location and switch to satellite view
2. Zoom in as far as you can, and click “link to this page” at the top right
3. Now replace the “z” parameter in the URL with a higher value, e.g. 20, 22, or 23, and wait. Some locations will now show more detailed imagery

This is a rare zoom level 23, almost (already?) creating privacy issues.

The French Ecrans website and Geotrotter have more on this.

Google Earth is the poor mans World Wind.

World Wind is NASA's version, includes 5 other planets (including the moon).

Very good!

World Wind data is much, much older though. Until a recent enough update it had, fairly notably, an empty site for Apple's headquarters (built in 1993). But it does have better detail for some places than Google Earth/Maps.

Apologies if I'm being a doofus but a) How do you switch to satellite view? Is this not the default setting? And b) where is this "link to page" button?

It even has decent coverage of my area and I live in an insignificant suburb of Bristol. It must have fairly recent data though as it shows our car in the driveway and we've lived here less than a year.

It only works for some areas, as it says. I thought it might get down to that level of resolution in NYC but no luck.
