totally agree most ref's would have booked scholes for an early tackle that would have ruled him out of the portugal game but collina proved wat a fantastic ref is he is by using common sence!!

The other sensible man tonight was Sven.
I particularly liked the way he rewarded all his goalscorers with an early sit-down to watch the end of the game in comfort.

Can't help but worry Collina will finally make a bad decision (as even the best refs must) and England will suffer for it! But no sign as yet. . .
He just seems too good a ref to be true. . . And, yes, too cool a ref to be true. . . My dad's interviewed him a few times and swears he revealed all his hair fell out when his wife left him - if true, maybe she was partly the making of him... Then again, he came to English attention about the same time Ravanelli did, on Channel 4's Serie A coverage - ah, how true quality endures. . .

He has to retire this year, apparently. Maybe just Uefa competitions. Can't see the likes of Mike Riley or Andy D'Urso denying him a place in the Premiership if that really is an option.

The fact that he garners respect from the players also helps them to avoid cards - they don't tend to argue with his decisions, which seems a prime reason that so many cards are given.
One decision for the Croats free-kick was wrong though - Cole just poked it out for a corner and yet was penalised for a foul.
That resulted in a goal for them - so we are not completely blessed by the adjudications of Collina.
He does command a respect though, over and above any other ref. I wonder if he had tufts of hair, if that would make any difference?

One thing that I always notice about Collina's games is that the trainers are hardly ever on the pitch. In some of these games, players have been rolling around in agony if an eyelash gets in their eye or if their headband gets twisted. No-one dares to do anything like that with Collina.
Just imagine how good the Czech R v Holland game would have been if Collina had reffed it. Doesn't bear thinking about.
BTW, does anyone else think that Anders Frisk is also a pretty good ref? He's almost in Collina's mould in his ability to command a game and he doesn't get much wrong (apart from looking like a porn actor that is).

Collina has not always been so hot in Italian domestic football. Funnily enough though, he rarely gets to handle Juve or Milan (AC) games as he is one ref they cannot readily control, unlike so many others.
