Beginning a phased shutdown from today until it stops airing completely in April 2012. A sad farewell to an old friend, before the days of SSN my 1,2,3 buttons on my remote were completely worn down due to the three or four times daily viewing of 312 Football News In Brief to find any Albion related tit-bits.

Penalty shoot outs were always much more nerve racking being followed on ceefex / teletext

But I want page 1.

Ah the good old days.

and then it came round and wouldn't be on screen long enough to read it all

Or you'd have shit reception and half the letters would be missing.

Actually our TV had a "HALT" button that would stop that particular page for as long as you liked (until it cancelled after about 30 seconds). I hate to BRAG but it did put our family a STEP above everyone else.

R.I.P Ceefax. Remember gazing longingly at Page 325 for months on end, working out the combinations and permutations for us to overtake Reading. Until that magical Easter Monday when Lee Steele headed us a winner with the last touch of the game and damn near gave me a heart attack in that daft little V Block!

I remember "watching" a whole game on ceefax.

this was in the days when we had Paul Byrne on loan from Celtic. Think we were playing Rotherham away circa 1995 and it finished 3-3 or 4-3 to Rotherham.

Dad and I were cheering as at one point we went 3-2 up I think. Mum said it sounded like a good game as we were waiting for the updates.

It didn't begin a phased shutdown everywhere today.

We on the other side of the North Sea stopped getting it at least 5 years ago. Unless you count the 888 subtitles page, which still works.

I used to get so excited when the "latest scores" would suddenly move on from 1/3 to 2/4. Oohh, there's been a goal somewhere as the additional goalscorer has meant we need an extra page. But WHERE is the goal, and who has scored it. You just don't get THAT sort of tension with SSN or t'internet.

Ha ha, so true! It was so nerve jangling it was ridiculous!

I used to play the quizzes. I considered the "reveal" button (to reveal the answers) to be the CUTTING EDGE of interactive entertainment technology at the time.

When the service was called 4-Tel on Channel 4 in the late 1980s, they briefly tried late night porn which used the Reveal button.
