I find it's usually down to age.

It is usually to protect the family of either the perpetrator or the victim. Stop vigilantism etc.

Surely Nibble the 'locals' must know who it involves ? This is not about the baby 'P' case.

Probably. However, everyone is innocent until proven guilty and everybody is entitled to a fair trial. Publishing names of a potentially innocent defendant and can be very damaging and if tey are found innocent the damage to reputation can still ruin your life with the attitude "no smoke without fire" etc.

Robert Murat this week accepted an out of court settlement from Sky News for defamation of character , all down to the Portuguese authorities naming him as a suspect. He earlier was awarded £500k compensation from various newspaper titles who did the same.

If we are talking about the Baby "P" case, then I understand there is another child in the family and God help the poor little devil.

There's quite a lot of different reasons - but mainly it is to prevent the identity of children. Those accused who are under 18 aren't named but usually can be if they're found guilty. Similarly other people aren't named because of the so-called 'jigsaw effect' - if a parent etc is identified you would know who the child is if you knew the parent etc etc.

Similarly, this rule is why the media have to put a person's age and road where they live in court reporting, as otherwise people might think it's the wrong Bob Smith from Horsham or whatever.

Most potentially innocent victims' names are still published, even those accused of rape. Whereas the alleged victims are granted anonymity unless they choose to waive this.

Seeing as how the poor little mite is dead, the names - and addresses - of the shits that did this should be named just as soon as the inevitable Guilty verdict is reached. Should take less than a minute. Then leave it to the decent members of the human race to DESTROY all traces of that feral gene pool and make the world a better place for future generations.

They might not be if Baby P has any siblings for the reasons mentioned above.

usually due to being under age, dont think children under 16 are named (might be 18) even if convicted. others are due to other ongoing cases so that one case does not prejudice another which is progress. it might be an order of the court due for some good reason (they arent going to do it for giggles).

People under 18 cannot be named when they are appearing in court unless the judge gives special permission to do so OR appears in an adult court and the judge does not make a court order banning the naming of the youth.

These will often be relaxed if the person is a persistant young offender. ASBOs are different as they are civil matters and one which, in order for it to be 'successful', relies on people knowing who they are and what they are banned from doing.

A breach of an ASBO however is a criminal matter and thus the person breaching is not named unless the magistrates make allowances for the press to do so.

Any victim of any sexual offence is given anonymity for life.

In cases where naming someone else will make it RUDDY OBVIOUS who the person who is meant to have anonymity is they will also be not named.

Hence if a dad rapes his daughter a paper will nearly always say A DAD raped his daughter and 'who cannot be named for legal reasons' rather than (as the PCC suggests they should say) JOE BLOGGS raped a teenage girl.

Oh, and Baby P has a sister.
