Cruddas got my first preferential vote.

Blears was definitely last!(As I hope she finishes)

Who would you like to become the next deputy leader of the Labour party and possibly the next deputy PM?

The next Deputy Leader of the Labour Party should definitely NOT be given the job of Deputy Prime Minister.

When the Labour Party is in power, the job of Deputy Party Leader should be to ensure that the views of party members are heard by the Prime Minister. If the Labour Party is at all representative of the people who voted for it, that will also bring a possibility that the views of the people will get a hearing.

Prescott got the Deputy Party Leader's job originally because he was thought to play that role effectively.

Once he became Deputy Prime Minister, the job changed - he began to see it as a job that was basically to explain government policy to the rest of the party. That's something that ALL ministers have to do, including the Prime Minister and his team of spin doctors.

The Deputy Leader simply gets tainted if he or she ends up as a mouthpiece for the government..

Have always been a big fan of Hilary Benn, he has done a superb job at Overseas Development, not a high profile role but important nonethess. He isn't quite as left wing as his father, but is what I see as the acceptable side of Socialism, in fact he would probably sit equally well within the Lib Dems.

Anyone but Hain. Smug, lying, orange and a mad careerist tosser who will sacrifice anything (people, principles, truth) in order to climb the greasy pole (insert immigrant joke here).

That is at least what he has become. In the 80s and 90s, he was a very good speaker on anti-racist issues, and it was interesting to listen to him. Not now though.

FWIW, out of those six, I wouldn't plump for any of them. But if I HAD to, I would go for Hilary Benn. He comes across as the person most likely to stand up to the grumpy bully Gordon Brown (texture like sun).

Harriet it is I think.

From The Guardian's live blog ...

"The BBC is calling it for Harriet Harman, but there's no confirmation in the hall. They say it's confirmed, but Labour themselves aren't confirming it".

More from The Guardian ...

"Behind me someone from Labour is bollocking someone from the BBC for saying Harriet Harman has been "confirmed" as deputy leader. They're not saying it's wrong, however. Watch this space".

"Mr Griffiths is now finally reading out the real results - in the first round Jon Cruddas got a total of 19%, Hilary Benn 16.5%, Peter Hain 15.3%, Harriet Harman 18.9% and Alan Johnson 18.1%. Hazel Blears was eliminated from the first round with 11.7%".

"Second round: and although the announcer is giving everything to two decimal places from each round and college, I'm going to summarise otherwise I'll get hopelessly behind and confused. A full breakdown will follow on the site. Peter Hain was eliminated at the second round and his votes redistributed"
