Good people of NSC, I need some advice please? What is the best way of permanently erasing data from a hard drive?

Mother in Law has an old PC she wants to give away, but I have now put the fear of God into her as I told her that even though we have deleted all the files, they are actually still on the hard drive, accessible by anyone in the know.

Will reformatting the disk do it? Smashing the hard drive is not an option!!

Any tips gratefully received and thanks in advance!!
