I'm looking to buy a new TV plus box for digital etc. I want something biggish. I can't afford to pay silly money like 2 grand for the top of the range but am prepared to spend a fair bit to get something good. Any thoughts?

Would'nt even think of buying an LCD or Plasma because they are shit compared to a decent CRT set. Samsung have just released a 32 inch CRT HD compatible set available on Amazon for £386!!!!:p Its a slimfit TV and although not as slim as an LCD its way smaller than the usual CRT sets your used to, plus its fully HD compatible and future proofed.

A decent CRT is still the way to go, don't be fooled by the hype get one of these.

Sorry, can't agree with you in my experience. I had a Panasonic CRT only about 5 years old, my LCD is faaaar better than that was.

Its all in the eye of the beholder I suppose but, the primary advantage that CRT TV have over LCDs is their colour rendering. The contrast ratios and depths of colors displayed are much greater with CRT's than LCDs. Many strides have been made in LCDs and the difference is not as great as it once was.

The other advantage that CRT's have over LCD screens is the ability to easily scale to various resolutions, hence standard definition TV (SKY Digital) on a LCD can look worse than on a CRT set.

I've got one of these

http://www.avwow.com/product/product_details.php?id=38

I've just set my PC through it to run some High Def downloads and they look simply stunning. It also looks good with most feeds through a standard Sky+ box, although some of the cheaper channels (UK Gold or whatever its now called etc) look a bit ropey. On the whole the picture is a lot more colourful and vibrant than a standard TV. Also the multi card reader is great for slide shows of holiday snaps, or making porn look great blown up to 50" size.

Blows the Sony out of the water in picture quality. You'll need a stand for it though but you can pick up a fantastic looking glass one from Ebuyer for about £60 including delivery

Another advantage of CRTs is that even if you put them in the corner of the room they still stick out so far that you can reach the controls from the sofa rendering the remote control obsolete. Saves a fortune on batteries.

Also, if you need to move it you have to recruit all the contenders in Worlds Strongest Man to take the weight.
