STAR COLLAPSED ON PITCH
Sao Caetano defender Serginho has died after collapsing on the pitch during a Brazilian league match.
Serginho fell to the ground in the 60th minute of the game, when the ball was at the other end of the pitch.
Sao Caetano keeper Silvio Luiz, defender Dininho and Sao Paulo striker Grafite desperately called for medical assistance.
Both teams' doctors attended the player, giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and cardiac massage in an attempt to revive him.
After 15 minutes, the player was rushed to Sao Luis Hospital, in Sao Paulo city.
The Sao Paulo team doctor said: "When we first reached him, he had no pulse and was breathing with great difficulty."
He died in hospital of cardio-respiratory arrest, it has been reported.
One media report said he had planned to retire at the end of the year, under pressure from his family to rest.
The match between Sao Caetano and Sao Paulo, which was goalless at the time of the incident, was abandoned.
Deaths on the pitch are a rare occurence in professional soccer with only a handful of cases reported over many years.
