Bill Archer was a highly successful businessman, astute in accumulating himself a massive personal fortune from his DIY company.

The same can not be said for his personal attributes. Almost single handedly, he plunged Brighton & Hove Albion towards a fate worse than death.

Two directors, Bill Archer and Greg Stanley, saw their chance and gained control of the ailing football club. Mr Archer himself paid a mere £56.25p (give or take). They took control amidst the chaos by introducing a new bank loan. This money enabled Brighton to pay off some debts and things seemed to be looking up for the club. The new board brought in former Eastbourne M.P. David Bellotti as chief executive and Liam Brady as manager.

In July 1995 the local Argus newspaper revealed that Archer, Stanley and Bellotti had done a deal to sell the Goldstone Ground, without so much of a whisper to the ever faithful Brighton fans. This brilliant idea was setup with no acceptable plans to relocate the club to a new stadium. The Board said it was necessary to clear the debts.

The new owners of the Goldstone Ground were Chartwell Land, a property development company. Brighton and Hove Albion were left with no alternative, but to accept another season at the Goldstone, at a cost of £480,000, having primarily rejected it.

A decade on and the club is still creaking and groaning from the Archer/Stanley/Belotti era, with a rented athletic stadium housing Championship football.

Archer's legacy will live on in the memories of many football fans worldwide, for as long as they live. The Fans, Dick Knight and the new board, rescued the club. Finally cutting all ties with Archer early on in the 21st century. The birth of Fans United raised awareness of the plight, and a stark warning to other clubs.

To cut a long story short....

A money merchant intent on adding to his fortune by destroying an ailing football club.
