close after Like a Rolling Stone has to be this .....

In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected
and steppin' out over the line
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
'Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Just remembered...

"Well my daddy left home when I was three,
and he didnt leave much, for ma and me,
'cept this only g-tar and an empty bottle of booze..."

Jonny cash - A boy named sue.

for your consideration:

The Mekons - Rock and Roll:

"when I was just 17, sex no longer held a mystery to me
I saw it as a commodity
to be bought and sold like rock and roll

Lilac Wine - lyrics James Shelton

"I lost myself on a cool damp night
Gave myself in that misty light
Was hypnotized by a strange delight
Under a lilac tree"

Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan

"You got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend,
when I was down you just stood there grinning"

The Concept - Teenage Fanclub

"She wears denim wherever she goes
says she's gonna buy some records by THE Status Quo -whoa yeah, whoa yeah"

I Broke my promise - American Music Club

"I broke my promise
that I wouldn't write another song about you
I guess I lied - after twelve years I still love you"

Rudie Can't Fail - The Clash

"Sing, michael, sing-on the route of the 19 bus
Hear them sayin’
How you get a rude and a reckless?
Don’t you be so crude and a feckless
You been drinking brew for breakfast
Rudie can’t fail"

Dikie Davis Eyes - Half Man Half Biscuit

"Mention the Lord of the Rings one more time and I'll more than likely kill you"

Do you have the time, to listen to me whine ?

No, not the first line of the Chesterfield club anthem but in fact 'Basket Case' by Green Day.

i am the son, and the heir,
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar.
i am the son and heir,
of nothing in particular.

how soon is now. the smiths.
or

all men have secrets, and here is mine, so let it be known.
for we have been through hell in my time, that means i can rely on you.
and yet you start to recoil heavy words that are so lightly thrown.
but still, i'd jump in front of a flying bullett for you.

what differance does it make. the smiths.

Ah for The Smiths I'd go with

"In a river the colour of lead
immerse the baby's head.
Wrap her up in the News Of The World
Dump-her-on-a-doorstep girl"

This Night Has Opened My Eyes. Sheer genius.

found it hard to choose any coz they are all brilliant.

how about.

punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate.
will nature make a man of you yet.

charming man. the smiths.

Let's face it, no Smiths would be out of place here.

I'd plump for "Girlfriend in a coma I know, I know it's serious."

or indeed

"When you walk without ease on these streets where you were raised. I had a very bad dream. It lasted 20 years, 7 months and 27 days and I never, never had noone ever."

And all of Morriseys new stuff is complete shite.

The Smiths ? Probably the most overrated band of all time unless you think slashing your wrists is a good hobby.

you obviously do not get the immense humour of morrissey then.
or the amazing guitar riffs by johnny marr. shame really you are missing out on so much. also compaired to a lot of todays music they are not actually that depressing. was not depressing it was about taking the piss. always brings a massive smile to my face.:lolol: . if you want depressing try radiohead, the verve or portishead. all of which i like but more depressing than the smiths.
oh, and great pioneers of the modern music. not over rated at all in my opinion. not like oasis. who wouldn't of been around without the smiths. neither would stone roses. and they rank alongside smiths as best band ever in my opinion.

Hard days made me, hard nights shaped me
I don't know they somehow saved me
And I know I'm making something out of this life they called nothing
I take what I want
Take what I need
They say it's wrong but it's right for me
I won't look down
Won't say I'm sorry
I know that only God can judge me :clap2:

For a wonderful ennui/angst fueled quiz for the pale and skinny everywhere:

smiths lyric generator

personally I go for the following for simplicity itself

Good times for a change
See, the luck I've had
Can make a good man
Turn bad

(there's more to life than books you know, but not much more)

I am the son and the heir.............is one of the greatest starts ever, without doubt. thank you Graz126. I had forgotten it.

How about.............

Kicking away the moments that make up a dull day.

Pink Floyd at their finest?
