I only got a standard e-mail back same as others, look like the will fob off our concerns. Glad I will not have to endure hearing all about Portsmouth if I live in Worthing, club may have to advertise in West Sussex to let kids know they have a Sussex team.

Thanks for contacting us.

We’re of course very sorry to learn of your evident unhappiness with reports on the removal of coverage of Brighton and Hove Albion coverage in West Sussex, thus we hope to be able to provide a little more background to the situation.

BBC ‘South Today’ programmes will actually continue to run Brighton and Hove Albion football results on Saturdays and mid-week bulletins, as we’re aware that there are supporters across Sussex. BBC ‘South Today’ will also look to take material from BBC ‘South East Today’ when there are major stories about the club. This approach will ensure the best value for money for licence fee payers at a time when our limited resources are under intense pressure from ever-rising costs, meaning we’re required to make considerable year-on-year savings in every area of our operations.

The background to this is that, historically, analogue transmissions on the south coast overlapped considerably thus the BBC South region and the BBC South East region had somewhat blurred boundaries making it rather difficult to assign stories to one or the other; there was often the potential for duplication and this was deemed a waste of resources. The entire south coast has just one ITV region, but we wish to provide a more localised service to BBC viewers, as is the case elsewhere in the country too. In doing so, there will absolutely always have to be somewhere where an editorial line is drawn between the two - this isn't an exact science therefore we’ve to do our best within the limitations upon us.

Digital switchover means that the transmission areas are now much more defined and we’re aligning ourselves in terms of news coverage areas accordingly. We’re concentrating our Brighton coverage now in our BBC South East news programmes more than in the BBC South regional programmes.

We’re still, like all broadcasters, at the mercy of the vagaries of geography and topography in that terrestrial television signals may not have a clear and obvious boundary, thus it may still be the case that some people nearer one location may actually get signals through their rooftop aerial from another area. This is beyond our direct control, of course, but options are available in that satellite viewers (Freesat or via Sky) can choose their BBC region by selecting the appropriate channel number; an aerial specialist may be able to advise on re-setting a rooftop aerial to pick up a different transmitter; and cable and broadband customers should contact their supplier for advice.

As explained, the reality is that whilst we appreciate Brighton and Hove fans are widely spread, Brighton itself is in our South East region thus it’s appropriate that the bulk of coverage is on ‘South East Today’.

We hope this helps to clarify our approach and to reassure you that we do take this matter seriously and are doing our best to provide appropriate and best value for money coverage.

We’d like to assure you that we've registered your complaint on our audience log. This is an internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily and is available for viewing by all our staff. This includes all programme makers and presenters, along with our senior management. It ensures that your points, along with all other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.

Thanks again for contacting us.

Kind Regards

This IS A BAD idea!

:wrong:

I can feel a call coming on....

... and indeed I did make the call. It is true but Greg pointed out they aren't completely abandoning the Albion but it would only be "significant news" they would report on. I've expressed my displeasure and it's been "noted". I said "I'm not happy" about the change. I wonder if coverage increases if we win promotion!? Even better if Saints and Royals go down!!! Oh well progress eh?

I forgot to ask if they'll be covering Crawley - which is in West Sussex!!!

:albion2:BBC South have confirmed they will not cover us next season. Viewers in West Sussex will be treated to Southampton, Bournemouth, Aldershot, Portsmouth and Oxford United coverage. This is because the majority of West Sussex are not interested in BHA, according to the BBC.

If you think this is a bad idea they would love to hear your feedback.

Call 02380 226201 and ask for Greg Clark.

No apologies if this is fixtures.

Time to get emailing again me thinks. I see they've gone completly against their word. F##K ALL from them on Southampton Today on BHAFC, yet cover the bloke from Worthing doing the 10 marathons in 10 days in 10 countries for Worthing & BRIGHTON hospitals.

I still find it stupid that half of the 10th largest built up area in England gets it's news from one location and the other half from another.

Do BBC South Today know they will lose tens of thousands of viewers when Living TV launches in Brighton and we'll get HB&B doing the sports news ?

f*** em. I never watch Meridian or South today. If you need to wait until Monday to get your updates and action on The Albion then you are missing a trick anyway.

Were we not on BBC South Today tonight?

In the email they sent me they stated that theyu would use the coverage from BBC South East and continue to cover us, due to work I have not seen many of the 18.30 slots. Have they been covering us at all this season?

Aside from the threat of HB&B doing the sports news, that won't help out Albion fans... the new channel won't have any rights to show Albion highlights other than 'news access' which is very limited.

Silent protest from me. Used to religiously watch ITV South & BBC South newslots just for Albion news. Don't watch them at all now.

Got my email back today, here's what it says...

Thanks for contacting the BBC regarding ‘South Today’ broadcast on the 24th September.

I understand that you were disappointed that no mention was made of Brighton and Hove Albion FC during the sports bulletin.

BBC South Today covers a large and diverse path of England and choosing the stories to include in our sport bulletins; the order in which they appear and the length of time devoted to them is a subjective matter and one which we know not every viewer will feel we get right every time. We try to give a wide range of sporting activities as much airtime as possible, offering more range than other network stations across the UK. Regional programming can of course be tailored to relevant audiences.

I am sure you can appreciate, that despite our best efforts, we cannot accommodate the myriad tastes of all sport lovers. A difficult decision has to be made by the BBC on the amount of time available to report on the days sporting results. We are aware that the choices we make will not be appreciated by all sections of our audience. However we do appreciate feedback when you feel that we have got it wrong or overlooked a sports story.

To that end, noting your strength of feeling, all of your comments regarding the sports bulletins being England centric have been registered on our audience log. Audience reaction is crucial to the BBC and this log is an internal report of feedback which we compile daily and make available to all BBC news channel executives, including the BBC Executive board and BBC Sport.

I can assure you that we do take our complaints seriously and the logs are seen as important documents whereby our audience can help shape decisions about the future of our programming and content.

You may be interested in visiting the BBC Sport website which is dedicated to Brighton and Hove Albion FC –

Thank you again for taking the time to write to us and bringing your feelings on this matter to our attention.

Kind Regards

Audrie Wilson

They are trying to push us over to BBC South East, which in truth is a bit ham.

Worked with me I watch that instead of BBC Southampton now

Thats fine but the effect is that most people watching will now think that Portsmouth and Southampton are the regional sides.

This has will have a negative effect in the long run, to partition an area into at the regional centre is crazy.
