We were trying to think of this in college today-

a) What year was it when goalkeepers couldn't pick up the ball from a pass

and

b) What year was it when goalkeepers couldn't pick up the ball from a throw in?

I remember when the no picking up from a throw in rule came in because i was playing in goal at the time and i kept forgetting!

Last competitive season I played in was 95 and keepers could still catch the ball from throw-ins then.

It was the start of the 92-93 season when the backpass rule started.

I have a feeling the rule outlawing it from throw-ins was 96-97.

As a I can remember it happening at Euro 96.

Outlawing from the throw in came much later, only properly about 4-5 years ago. If I remember rightly.

But that is far more of a desperation move. Teams used to base their whole game around getting it back to the keeper and then pumping it into the opponents half.
