Question:

If potatoes cost three pence farthing a pound, how much does a stone of potatoes cost?

Working:

1 stone = 14 lbs
14 x 3 = 42
14 x 1/4 = 3 and 1/2

42 + 3 and 1/2 = 45 and 1/2

Answer:

3/- 9d and 2 farthings (or one ha'penny).

Why was Yorkie wrong ??

Exactly. Did it in my head first, then checked Google Calculator, then checked on my phone. Same answer every time.

Is it £14, because as Lord B said, a stone is 14 pounds.

Or am I trying to be too clever for my own good?

I didn't Lord B would stoop to such evil-bastard lows as doing that

But yes, it could easily be that he wasnts £14 as the answer.

All three people who have calculated the price of spuds are WRONG.

All three of them are old enough to have used pre-decimal currency as well.

Only if I shared my mother's uterus with it - I know I look somewhat aged but I wasn't born until 3 months after decimalisation

I think I might stay in tonight now

I notice that no-one's attempted to answer the Spectator's questions though :)
