Are the Chinese still at it?

"Please" and "thank you" can not be translated from English into Mandarin or Cantonese because there is no words for them. In my experience right bunch of rude bastards.

Not quite true:

Chinese (Mandarin) - Xie_Xie (shieh shieh)
Chinese (Cantonese) Mh goi (m-ghoh-ee) (informal: thanks)
Chinese (Cantonese) Do jeh (tou yeh) (formal: thanks)

I like Chinese people. They're some of the most polite humans in the world. Thank goodness snooker isn't an Olympic sport yet; Ding Junhui would win gold probably and the Chinese are catching up fast. Makes me wonder when they'll start to boom at football - it'll happen eventually.

USA were 4/6 favourites to win most medals before the Olympics. China must be massive odds on now to achieve that - rather them than the Yanks.

nope usa currently 1/3 and china 11/4

and china being expected to win most of these medals anyway was factored into the original price

The olympics and its spirit died years ago. Massive clean up and overhaul required.

Agreed. At the opening ceremony a single athlete, on behalf of all athletes, promised that they wouldn't cheat. That's how much effort the anti doping committee has put in.

biggest country on earth with a shit load of money to pump into training, plus as stated by others, a slightly "different" attitude to training their kids

hardly surprising that they're cleaning up

and if they're getting away with cheating then i suspect other countries are as well

The GB female rowing team knocked 5 seconds off the Olympic record too, they are probably at it too.

That has cleared that up then maybe they should try using them, at least occasionally.

They do. If you were unaware of the Mandarin/Cantonese words for thank you, how can you claim they don't use them? How much time have you spent in China? What did you do there?

The Chinese are very culturally different to us and the Confucian outlook can give an impression of rudeness; however, other than a complete inability to queue, they're generally polite and courteous.

Well are they?
Sixteen year old Chinese swimmers knocking 5 seconds off their PB and recording a 50m time quicker than Ryan Locktie ( Lochte/Lochtee...whatever his surname is )
We all know what happened in the 90's following the unification of Germany. Coaches who had been ' training ' East German athletes and swimmers moved to China. Lo and behold, Chinese women started smashing world records for fun...and most of those world records were held by East Germans. Everyone knew what was going on, the record breaking women disappeared as quickly as they had emerged and we all hoped that the Chinese had ' cleaned up their act '
Am I just an old cynic and are they genuinely producing streams of world beaters?
A nation of that size, with that power and drive and financial clout will produce some but the Orientals were always held back in a lot events due to their lack of size. Now it doesn't seem to matter and they are competing across the board.
I hope my suspicions are totally unfounded and that they are fast becoming the most successful sporting nation on the planet.....but I'm still just a little uneasy at the rate of progress.

Yes, they're doping. They had 7 doping failures at the Beijing Olympics where they had the best opportunity to avoid getting caught. They've had more than 40 psitives in the last few years. The numbers speak for themselves.

So by the same logic should we assume that ALL British athletes are doping since we have David Millar and Dwayne Chambers in our ranks?
