Yep, big REM fan here. Just bought their new album, Around the Sun, which is great - in true REM style it gets better with every listen although for the non-converted is probably too gloomy. Got tix for their gig at the NEC in Feb which, quite handily, comes the day after the trip to Leeds - a few days up North coming up I think!!
Just got tix for when they play Old Trafford next summer.
In the meantime, check out Stipe, an REM tribute band who are spot on, the lead singer even talks to the audience in an Athens, Georgia accent betwen songs, despite the fact he is from Northwich.
I'm a huge fan - I was worried I wasn't going to like "Around the Sun" especially as some of the reviews were poor to say the least. First couple of plays - I wasn't sure - but having played it every day on my travels between London Bridge and Brighton - I can assue you - it's a grower!!
Been a big fan since '84. Saw them twice in '89 and going to see them in Hyde Park in July. Have to say though that I think the new album is poor by their standards and that Wanderlust replaces Shiny Happy People as the worst REM song on record! I'm sure Around The Sun will grow on me a bit but I've played it a few times now. I thought Reveal was a turning point, maybe after Michael Stipe 'came out', the songs don't seem to be as strong musically or lyrically anymore, a bit too coffee table arty-farty now for my liking. Green and Life's Rich Pageant remain my favourite albums.
Indeed I am a big fan bought every one of their albums and they are all class. Looking forward to seeing them at Hyde Park next summer. Got Gold Cricle tickets so will actually be able to see the band on stage.
Was a big fan in mid eighties and saw them two nights running at Hammersmith. Supported both nights by The Blue Aeroplanes who had 15 guitarists they sounded
Not so keen on their newer stuff, but still listen out for them.
