Looking at that. Half of the signings he's made are quite shit. But the rest are quality.

With our budget, seldom paying a transfer fee, most are gonna be a risk. 50% hit rate is good in these circumstances. Slade also did well imo and Adams disaster on the pitch stemmed from his disastrous and I imagine quite expensive signings. Gus has done well. Not forgetting the most important aspect which is getting average players to play well as a team in the Clough/O'Neil mode

He's made plenty of quality signings (full backs, KLL, GG, Spaz and others) but also theres a lot of real shit in there, so I'll give him a 7.

my views.

Ashley Barnes (great signing)
Inigo Calderon (great)
Marcos Painter (great)
Chris Holroyd (definately worth the risk, doing well at stevenage)
Kazenga LuaLua (loan) (immense)
Diego Arismendi (loan) (flair, but poor. On reputation it was a COUP)
Danny Naisbitt (cover)
Lee Hendrie (free, worth a go)
Gordon Greer (brilliant)
Cristian Baz (promising)
Augustin Battipiedi (good squad player)
Michael Poke (cover)
Matt Sparrow (great signing)
Radostin Kishishev (great signing)
Fran Sandaza (unproven)
Liam Bridcutt (a good squad addition)
Thorbjorn Agdestein (youth player)
Casper Ankergren (a very good keeper on a free)
Chris Wood (loan) (a good loan signing, i hope)

Out
Graeme Smith (had to go)
Mevin mcLeod (had to go)
Andrew Crofts (good money)
Dean Cox (time was right to move on)
Nicky Forster (time was right)
Liam Dickinson (had to go sadly)
Jake Wright (was sad to see him go but was not near the first team)
Michel Kuipers (the time was right. hero)
Craig Davies (had to move for his own good really)
James Tunnicliffe (loan) (hopefully will come back better, wouldnt get near our team)
Jim McNulty (loan) (strange one, but i still hold hope for jimmy)
Andrew Whing (loan) (had been poor. calderon is god)
Steve Cook (loan) (sensible loan)
Chris Holroyd (loan) (doing great on loan, still VERY young)

Sandanza and Poke are the only real stinkers in there, fair play to him rest have been OK->Excellent. Agdestein was only a development player anyway, so cannot expect much

Bit harsh to say he only has a 50% hit rate. Holroyd hasn't worked to date but who knows what will happen when his loan is up. Arismendi didn't work and Naisbett was only ever back up same as Poke. Bar that where are the cock ups?

THREE out of ten, I think.

I think you're all forgetting we are BIG SPENDING Brighton, so naturally I'd expect a lot more than being 4 points clear at the top with the vast funds at his disposal. Afterall, little Southampton down the road have spend a fraction of what we have and are only 8 points behind.

Southampton are having a storming season by their standards though, I'm sure they won't be able to keep overachieving like they are.

but on performance he was CRAP
I still don't know why he got so much stick.. over expectations maybe, he wasn't very good but he wasn't awful and he didn't even play that many games.

Overall I'd say 7-8/10, mostly very good but a few minor flaws.

ten.

some managers go on about building their own team. Gus has done it in a year, and what a team it is. Sure there are some gambles in there that didnt pay off, but look at Man City - just buying good players doesnt make you top. You have to get the right players . Not only do we have a team playing out of its skin, we have a team spirit that is unmatched by any of our opponents so far this season.

for that reason, Gus = WINNER

Probably the best left and right back in League One - check
Two seriously able keepers at this level - check
Young Player of the Month brought in despite competition from every club lower in the leagues than Newcastle - check
Guy who may prove to be the best CB in League One - check
Evidently a critical midfielder who has been missed whilst injured plus an experienced head playing out of his skin - check
Great utility midfielder - check
A Plan B striker who we can "go long" to if needed - check

Based on that, I'll forgive him anything or anyone else.

What's the deal with McNulty. I always liked him! Any chance we'll see him again soon?

(Maybe as that special left winger? :lolol:)

faultless, we are top.

if we could have had a proven 25+ striker... well sure, better. if it was possible, gus would have made it happen.

i echo that we are top in a year, therefore TEN out of TEN

no manager ever makes 100% perfect signings... except maybe wenger though i'd like to be proved wrong
