I was advised by someone who I used to work with, who is now involved with this sort of tracking down, that if you are sharing over 20GB of files, then you will be considered a valid target. Files are not normally tagged as they are passed, so you should be OK. He also says that most of the hits are random, and are based around popular music (if you are sharing off-the-wall stuff, then you are likely to be left alone).

I used to share (so did he!), but not anymore. It's easier to send your kids to school with a list of CDs that you want, and get their mates to do it for you!

Surely the best thing to do is to download what you want and then transfer it to a separate file that is not used for uploading.

I only allow people to upload my porn (as I believe in free love) but not music.

Currently they're only going after uploaders - and incredibly, incredibly stupid downloaders. But still, don't expect the free ride to continue.

Either that or just learn how to cog music and movies off friends land-based, like the good old days ;)

apparantly there's a website called 'allofmp3.com' I'm told whilst it's not free, it's very, very cheap to download music, and they have loads on there, they even had Arctic Monkeys album on there yesterday, so I was told.

No, you'll still get caught if you do it to a level that'll get "noticed". It doesn't stop you breaking the law, and it doesn't stop you being at risk of prosecution. However, downloaders usually get away a lot easier than uploaders.

All the prosecutions in Ireland so far have been for mass uploaders, although in each case they were done for anything they'd downloaded that could be proven too.

Only legal if you live in Russia, something they neglect to tell you. Music is sold under a Russian radio station licence...

I am not up in all of this but my grandchildren used this pc and linewire to download for their MP3 players is that illegal and what they are talking about.

My friend will be kicking your door down tomorrow evening. Please try and be in when he comes.

Uninstall Limewire, and slap them soundly around the head.

Surely it's a case of behaving in moderation. Download one album at a time then immediately transfer it to somewhere that can't be uploaded.

Change your settings for which directories you share. Reduce your sharing to around 10 files of stuff that no-one will want to download or search for. If you want to download, log on, download, log off and shut down limewire.
