A Local Pub For Cheltenham Festival?

The last couple of years me and a mate have gone down to Cheltenham for a couple of days for the Gold Cup and its been fantastic.

This year we are having a couple of days off and plan to watch the racing in a decent local boozer and pop next door to the bookies between races.

Sounds idyllic doesn't it?

Your nominations are invited for the best options where you recommend we can base ourselves. My mate lives in Burgess Hill. I'm in Brighton/Hove.

So the ideal hostelry will feature (in order of preference)
It'll have a TV showing the racing,
a bookies 2 minutes away,
decent beer,
pub grub,
not too far from a railway station,
child free drinking environment.

We have two days set aside and need your help.

I'm reliably informed that there are five or six excellent pubs in the town centre,all well worth a visit....

The Engineeer in Argyle Road (just under the viaduct by Preston Circus) springs to mind. Nice backsteeet boozer, They like their racing in there (they used to own a horse called - I think - Aint Misbehavin and maybe still do). The food is splendid and they have Harveys plus all the usual suspects. Only drawback is the nearest bookies is BetFred in London Road about 5-10 minutes walk away, but time between races to stroll there and back. Or just stick your bets on in advance or by phone.

The only slight adjustment I'd make to an otherwise excellent plan would be, as TH says, to set up the phone betting account beforehand. This would mean not having to leave the pub at all, and undisturbed drinking.

I will try and remember to get there earlier this time, so I can take full advantage of the Duty Free. The Old Spice and Hi Karate in there are about half the price of what Dave the pharmacist sells it for.
