Government to back World Cup bid

The new Wembley stadium would be a focal point of England's bid
The government is willing to back an English bid for the 2018 World Cup, says Sports Minister Richard Caborn.

Caborn revealed Chancellor Gordon Brown, who met Uefa president Lennart Johansson on Wednesday, was "very, very keen" on the idea.

Asked whether the government would support a bid, Caborn told BBC Radio 4: "Absolutely. I have no doubt."

The Football Association is still weighing up its options but chairman Brian Barwick said: "We would like it."

Interview: Sports Minister Richard Caborn

The 2010 World Cup is being held in South Africa, with the 2014 tournament set to go to a South American country.

From 2010, every third World Cup is expected to be awarded to a European country.

We should go for it. We have world-class stadia and the best domestic league

Barwick added: "If that is the year when it comes back to Europe, we're going to go for it.

"We don't have to decide now how we go about it, we have to learn the lessons of when we didn't get these things and learn the lessons of when we did - like the Olympics.

"I think (bid leader) Lord Coe was very clever, a brilliant guy and a really huge contributory factor, as was the playing of the major officials at the right time."

Coe has already indicated he would be willing to assist the FA in its bid.

If the FA does decide to bid, it could face competion from Australia.

we won't get it, far too close to the Olympics the powers that be won't give two major events to the same country within the space of 6 years.

I reckon by 2018 Australia would be pushing extremley hard to get the world cup here.

We have world class venues, and have shown we can run successful major event like the Olympics.

Added to that as we are now in Asias groupings we would have alot more voting power behind us now and by 2018 it should be due back in the Asia region after Europe, Africa and South America have held it the 3 previous cups.

The AMEX Arena in Falmer is poised to host 4 group games with Ghana & Poland making Brighton their base for the tournament.

Brighton fans have adopted both nations & special edition shirts are on sale at the Seagull Megastore which stands on the site of the old Swan pub on the Mike Bamber road.

A spokesman for the reigning European champions said, "The cosmopolitan city of Brighton is delighted to be hosting these 2 great footballing nations; Ghana are the African champions & we welcome Poland as there are loads of Polish sawts living in town!"

Bring it on!

We'd have a great chance. Fifa could keep their rotation system but make it Europe, South America, and Rest of World (incl South Africa and Oz), making it 2022 for Australia and possibly 2018 for us.

All the other big European countries have had it at least once since us. Russia could be interested.

England will get knocked out in the quarter finals after an outrageous refereeing decision goes against us and we lose on penalties after a heroic rearguard action kept the opposition out for 55 minutes.
