Albion look set to part ways with Marc Leonard this summer after two successful loan spells with Northampton Town, according to an interview in The Athletic. The 22-year-old Scottish midfielder has drawn interest from several Championship clubs, including Coventry, Preston, Swansea, Plymouth, and Cardiff. The Sky Blues were said to have been monitoring the Scot earlier this season.
Leonard’s time at Northampton has been notable, playing a key role in their promotion from League Two last season and contributing to their mid-table position in League One this season. His development has been evident, particularly in his increased goal output this season compared to the previous one.
His experience at Brighton, particularly the short spell he had working under Roberto De Zerbi, has left a lasting impression on him. Leonard acknowledges the difference in training methods and high attention to detail, which he believes has contributed to his growth as a player.
Reflecting on his loan experiences, Leonard highlights the initial challenges of transitioning to a professional environment but expresses gratitude for the growth opportunities they provided. He praises Brighton’s support system for loaned players, emphasizing the club’s commitment to player development.
Having been in contact with fellow Scotsmen Gordon Greer (Albion loans manager) and David Weir (technical director), Leonard has navigated his journey from Edinburgh, where he played for Hearts, to Brighton, acknowledging the challenges and growth he has experienced along the way.
Brighton’s operating model is well-known: young players like Leonard are developed to either progress to the first team, or be sold for profit. His association with players like Jack Hinshelwood and admiration for fellow Scot Billy Gilmour have served as motivating factors as he looks ahead to the next phase of his career.
Leonard’s potential move to the Championship marks another step in his development journey, driven by an ambition to excel both at club and, ultimately, international levels.
When Leonard joined in January 2018, the transfer fee was reported to be in the region of £350,000, including appearance add-ons, so the Albion are likely to bank a healthy profit should he depart. And, as is often the case, the club are sure to include a sell-on clause, allowing further upside if Leonard progresses on a similar trajectory to Viktor Gyökeres.
With 17 (seventeen) Albion players now nearing the conclusion of their season-long loans, it’s set to be a busy summer for ins and outs at the Amex.
