....together for england under....

fabio "not got a clue of the best team of formation 2 days before the world cup but I rake in £6m" capello?

how many times do ppl need to see these 2 cannot play well together.

the reason for me is super ego's. gerrard has been shit all season too and is now captain!

usa could be a shock win, but whatever happens there is no way we will win it.

Bizarre comment. They combined together excellently for the duration of the qualifiers. Where have you been since 2008?

IF your point is that they are being put in central midfield together, I agree, it is a concern, but if anyone can make it work, Fabio can.

If I was Fab Cap I would play Stevie and Lamps together, but like this:

.................... James ...................

Johnson .... Terry ..... King ..... Cole

.... Lampard ... Barry ... Gerrard ....

Lennon ............................ Rooney

................... Defoe .....................

Barry has been the answer for the so called 'Lampard & Gerrard problem'. With Barry acting as a holding midfielder, these two can and have been able to push on further up the field.

I am sure Fab knows his starting lineup, he is the best manager we have had of a long time and has everything under control. We have qualified very strongly and have a great chance this year. IMO there is no reason we can't go and do very very well and maybe, just maybe........

I have complete faith in Fabio that the Lampard-Gerrard central midfield combo is only a temporary measure while Barry recovers match fitness. I sincerely hope that Barry is back in for the next game, with Gerrard replacing either Cole or Lennon (whoever plays more poorly against the USA) on the flank.

Gerrard has 80 caps & lampard 78. I would imagine they have played 50 odd times together.

It would be interesting if someone could find the exact figures, and also the amount of games England lost with those two playing together.

I suspect we have only lost a handful of games when they have both been playing.

Its a myth that they can not play together.

how could you put Rooney on the left? Surely he's wasted out there - that's been shown Man U last year. Swap milner for rooney (and then him for Defoe) and you've got a team

We won all bar 1 of our qualifiers for f*** sake. It's common knowledge we will try and get through the group 4 - 4 - 2 then Barry comes in to restore order.

No need to whip it up

Its a myth that they can not play together.

It's not though, is it?

They're not an effective central pairing, because they're both attacking midfielders, and are used to playing with specialist defensive midfielders at club level - where they play so well. If you've got Barry in there, they're fine, as they can both play their natural games.

As such, although Carrick's a bit shit, I'd play him against the USA, to keep as closely to our best formation as possible.

No point playing both because if you play both you lose one players strengths because one of them has to do a job they don't like, Thats why we benefited from Gerrard playing left because we could slot someone in the midfield who complements the two of them.

Having said this I would have no qualms with them playing together during the group games.

Adrian Chiles after a recent game "Ohh the old conundrum, Gerrard and Lampard, they just can't play together blah blah bl.." Andy Townsend cuts in "NO ADRIAN there is no conundrum, of course they can play together, to say they can't is a myth, they are two of the greatest central midfielders in world football"
(or something along those lines)

- Andy spot on (for once)

Gerrard and Lampard have never played together for England. In fact, they've not met. That's the root of their problems.

I know in the past they haven't always performed well together but I don't see it as being a big problem. Gerrards played the defensive role many times for Liverpool and always does it well.

Shame Lampard wasn't made captain though

Individually of course they are terrific players, but as a central combination it simply doesn't work.
We'll get away with it against the dross in our group, but if/when we progress and come up against someone a bit good, I will be horrified if thats what we are resorting to.

Barry needs to come back (which he will), Gerrard can START on the left and rove around behind Rooney. Lampard can support, and Barry can shore things up behind them. Chuck Lennon down the right and voila, we're halfway decent.

We need a system that we don't chop & change through the tournament. That is the way to going out early. Gerrard should play left, and Carrick should start - until Barry is fit. We need to be a slick unit, not changing every game
