It is a brilliant film in so many ways. I read the Odyssey not long after, and recently read Margaret Atwoods Penelopiad, which in itself is a brilliantly funny take on what Penelope, Odysseus's wife was doing while waiting all those years, and from the point of view of the 12 maids who he strung up by their necks all in a line at the end...
