I like a few of his. Planes, trains.. and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are two of my favourite comedies.

His stand up is awful and so are most of his films. It’s the SNL alumni isn’t it. Just very unfunny.

I thought he was very good in Bowfinger - although his dog Betsy stole the show

He recently popped up in series 2 of the excellent Blue Lights.

A police drama set in Belfast.

His accent is pretty good. I assume he was going for a cross between Paddy O’ Potatohead and a deaf Brummie.

He really ramped up his puzzled, staring into the middle distance acting. Like he’s perpetually being given bad news. Awful.

He was probably under a bit of stress. His wife left him, and then he found out his lad was turning up to school wearing a dress. Rumour has it he had the whole school football team turned up in dresses for a match in protest because they wouldn't let him play.

I forced myself to sit through Serpico to see what the fuss was about with him, an extremely tedious hour or so of my life I won't see again.

He was always a fake.

He never rang true on screen.

Despite being a proponent of “manly values” he was one of the first Hollywood stars to have cosmetic surgery to try and keep his “youthful” looks.

The fact is that while there are some actors who cultivate a hard man image, very few actually are.

Some of Wayne’s generation of actors obviously fought in WW2 and so I’d likely say they were the real deal. But Wayne was arguably a draft dodger.

Wayne never enlisted and even filed for a 3-A draft deferment, which meant that if the sole provider for a family of four were drafted, it would cause his family undue hardship. Other version say he was too old to fight but desperately tried to enlist.

Either way, the closest he ever came to World War II service was portraying the actions of others on film. And he did that rather unconvincingly.

He was mostly a fraud.
