I still think we have the potential to be a match for all but the top 2.
We are still settling in to the FH way and have some fantastic players yet to be integrated in to the squad.
A fully fit Ferdi and March on the right flank and Estupinan (if he recovers his form) and Mitoma/Adingra on the left will light up many a match.
The midfield once settled will be very competitive when you have Wieffer, Baleba, O’Riley, Hinsh and Ayari fighting it out for a spot.
Up top will be equally as competitive for a starting berth what with Welbeck, JP, Georginio and Ferguson all wanting to play.
Havent even mentioned Minteh, Gruda, Enciso etc and the centre half’s pretty much pick themselves… would be a little concerned if we lost one of the first choice pairing to injury though.

Under RDZ we had a very solid core of JPVH, Dunk, Caicedo and Ally Mac, then Gross and Gilmour. The new core hasn't knitted together as well yet, because Wiefer got injured and then so did O'Riley. Baleba has stepped up and so has Ayari, and I have a feeling that it'll settle down as Wiefer and Baleba in front of Dunk and JPVH. That looks a very solid foundation to build everything else on, but it will take time.
A couple of things about this evening - some people have made the excuse that we fielded a team that largely hadn't played together, but Wolves made even more changes (10 to our 8). Our defending as a team was abysmal at times - Wolves' first goal was one of the worst I can remember us conceding. Nobody tracked Doherty, which I think was Minteh's fault, but Moder should have spotted the danger too. And despite the brilliant clearance off the goalline, I don't think Jack Hinshelwood has been quite at it yet. I expected better from him back on the right but maybe the trauma of having to play left back against Bukayo Saka has affected him.
Pluses - Adingra was excellent at times tonight and should start ahead of Minteh against Forest. Baleba is showing immense promise, and injured players such as Pervis and Ferguson are on their way back. When everyone's fit we'll give some unlucky team a five- or six-goal tanking and after that it will all be plain sailing. Probably.

Given how shit we were under RDZ second half of last season, I’d say an unbeaten start to the season whilst the new manager is figuring things out without most of the new signings available to him is pretty bloody decent. We are fine and nowhere near as good as we will be once things really click.
All teams ride their luck, all teams miss great opportunities. When this doesn't happen you get thrashings like Leicester against Stains. We have a new crop of young players who have never experienced the PL, and the same goes for the manager, we have a few who haven't played for months and months due to injury, and the ones that were here last year have a very fixed style of play to get out of. So sure we have had some luck but we have won 2 and drawn 2 and just beaten Wolves in the EFL Cup. Unlike RDZ, whose style was absolutely prone to being worked out, Hurzeler doesn't seem so transparent. So are we good? Yes we are, are we going to get better? Undoubtedly. Are we going to be in the bottom half this season? NOPE.

To answer your question - Yeah, upper midtable is about right.
Which doesn’t sound too sexy, but to put it into context , upper midtable would potentially mean finishing below: ManCity, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U, Spurs, Newcastle, Villa.
Of course, we aim for higher and with good reason. But a Brighton fan should not see midtable as a failure. Especially in a rebuild season.

Honestly, I think there’s so many variables that are still up in the air that I think it’s impossible to really tell. We’re a good side, there’s no doubt about that, but I can’t honestly pin point whether we’ll improve on last year yet, as I’ve just not seen enough of the new players. I also think the new manager will need a bedding in period - he’s shown some serious tactical naivety so far, that Prem teams will start to exploit sooner rather than later, if he doesn’t adapt.

NSC desperately trying to turn Webster into the new whipping boy, when what is obvious is that he is more than capable to not only provide cover, but push the other two.
Positionally, last night he was excellent, how many times did he intercept Wolves crosses.
As for where we are, not overly impressed quality wise, but early days, lots of room for improvement and results are everything. If we do have any European ambition then we need to beat the the newly promoted teams.
Forest is a big game IMO, in terms of gauging progress.

Or you could look at it the other way - because most of the new players haven't really played yet, we've most being fielding a team of players from last season's awful run, but picking up better results.
In my five years here, no one has got the amount of shit Webster has got. Its not "new". Sometimes NSC decides that someone else is the single cause of the team not winning 38 out of 38 league games etc. but in times of doubt, people return to the comfortable safety of Webster bashing.
