Not sure what you mean by that. They basically auction off the fuel. Or the moving of the fuel up the pipeline. The second bit is 100% as at night the tankers are lined up at the fuel depot at Gatwick picking up their deliveries for the morning. I used to be an aircraft engineer and would see them when I worked nights.

Do petrol storage tanks have spigots all the way down the sides, so that better paying customers get the best fuel? I would have expected, like with beer barrels, that the tap would be at the bottom.

Cheaper retail fuels in Hampshire may have to do with the proximity of Exxon/Esso’s Fawley refinery, the UK’s largest.
If anyone’s interested, please get a life but the UK tends to export its surplus of petrol and to import its extra diesel requirements, the latter formerly largely from Russia, now from further afield like from the US and the Middle East.
Some of the UK’s biggest diesel import facilities are on the Thames right next to the Dartford Bridge. Which means that, when driving across it, a deeply sad oil and shipping analyst “friend” of mine always tries to get a glimpse of the tankers berthed there, while vaguely trying also not to drive off it.

Yes, but the cheaper fuel is 23 miles from Shoreham in Chichester. Two other examples for me was filling up in August one mile from Gatwick airport when collecting from the airport which was 4/5p cheaper than down here and when going to a function in Eastbourne last year, it was also much cheaper there. The PFSs in Hove /SBS are just taking the p in my opinion.
Tesco Momentum 99 is E5 I believe and is comparable if not better than Premium fuel from the recognised oil companies offerings e.g. Shell V Power or at least that's what my Jaaaag owning mate tells me.
Drove my son and daughter back to Uni in Liverpool and Manchester at the weekend. Diesel was at least 10p cheaper a litre than round here.

Yup, I live in Brighton and work at Gatwick, fuel up there is much cheaper. I go to Esso at Copthorne where currently it’s 7p a litre cheaper than Asda Hollingbury.
I don't suppose he's done any research on that.
All petrol stations use the same fuel, usually coming from the same refineries. The only difference is that some retailers use different additives.
I use super unleaded (it's what the manual recommends) from a supermarket.
I can never remember which is meant to be better out of super unleaded and premium unleaded.

I buy supermarket fuel for our cars all the time and have no problem. There's no doubt that it is priced by area hence why Asda and Sainsbury's in Goring and Worthing are so much cheaper than Benfield Valley and Hollingbury (and don't get me started on Asda Royston, just outside Glasgow 
)
My mid life crisis only ever gets Unleaded+ (or E10) but I've no idea how many miles to the gallon as the petrol gauge seems to be directly wired to the rev counter

Super. For a lot of cars I doubt it makes a difference. Some sportier engines that can run a bit hot, the one with higher octane can be better (that's super, not premium). Both will have their octane rating displayed at the pump. The price will also be there.
Your mid-life crisis should get E5, not E10.
I've always thought supermarket petrol outperforms petrol from the Shell, Texaco and Esso garages near me and gives me more mileage, I'd never heard of this thing that they apparently have the dregs!
It's 1.32 at the Asda near me and 1.43 at Shell and I seem to get the same mileage out of both. Or I just get E5 at the Supermarket for more or less the same price as E10 elsewhere.

But I know the supermarkets have stopped selling it (asda never did and sainsbury have stopped)
