I need to sell my mum's car, as she won't be driving it any longer.

Any recent experiences of these (admittedly lazy) services, as I can't be arsed to go through an Autotrader private sale type route.

I assume they tend to try and knock you down from the online quote as they know you just want rid at that point in time.

Other than that, it looks like I'd have to drive the car to WBAC, which seems to be in Lancing, whilst it looks as though Motorway come to you.

Finally are there any other similar services I'm missing that might be better.

I’ve sold two cars, at asking price, on Facebook Marketplace, both for cash on the same day the post went up.


10/10 would recommend.

Sold a knackered old Volvo to wbac a few years ago. No problems here, and didn't feel ripped off.

I’ve just used Carwow to sell my car - similar premise to Motorway in that they auction it with traders / dealerships. They also allow you to set a reserve - their valuation came in about £1.5k more than motorway did and I ended up selling it for £2k more than the motorway valuation. Once the sale is agreed, they put the buyer in touch with you to arrange inspection and collection.

Ignore the price quoted on Motorway or We Buy any Car..............won't get anywhere near that amount.

Try Gumtree or Facebook......sold two vehicles this year one on either site.

WBAC quoted one price to my friends last week but went way lower when they actually saw the car. They then sold it on Motorway for more than WBAC offered originally.

Just in case you change your mind about a private sale what car is it Bozza? Asking for my daughter. She sold her car today to webuy
anycar for £2k having paid £4,700 for it a few months ago. They knocked £800 off the online quote. The process was very smooth.

I sold a car, in good condition, to WBAC last June 2023.
Their offer was more than I had been offered by a main dealer as part exchange. They didn’t quibble, did all the paperwork and the money was in my bank an hour or so later. A couple of friends have also reported fair deals.
Yes, you have to drive to them. If time and circumstances had been on my side, I may not have gone down that route and may have got a better deal, but it suited me at the time and was quick and convenient and pretty fair.

WBAC were so easy when I used them a few years ago. They paid off the outstanding finance directly and I got the balance in my account a few days later.

Obviously they don't give the best price, but I just wanted shot of the car with zero hassle and it was worth it for the stress free speedy experience.

I was slightly ripped off by WBAC around 5 years ago (although time was against me so really had little option). Newish Volvo, they knocked a chunk off the online quote for bits and bobs here and there. Some of which was for paint that was to thin, FFS
So firstly I'd make sure you document any issues upfront to make sure they cant knock any more off.
Secondly I'd get a main dealer quote if it is newish to at least compare.

I sold a car to WBAC a couple of years ago. the clutch was so shot that I could only drive at 20 mph with the clutch pedal partially depressed. The paintwork had any number of chips, scrapes and door bashes. The driver's seat was worn right through, the interior was dirty and knackered. There was a warning light permanently lit, the tyres all needed replacing. I had resigned myself to getting £50 for scrapping it but thought I'd try WBAC.

They quoted £2,500 and gave me £2,500 without even turning the engine on.

Very pleased!

I wouldn’t discount Autotradrer. I sold my wife’s Aunt’s car with an uploaded video about 3 years ago for £7,500. The equivalent opening quote on Motorway was about £1000 less than that before the bartering started. There were a few chancers on Autotrader but in the end it worked well although we did have to hold our nerve a bit for the right offers to come along.

I’ve sold two cars on Autotrader. In each case, it was the last resort because the cost is a lot more than many other platforms. However, it did the job each time and connected me with two great buyers. However, the last car sale was a mistake due to timing as the price for second hand cars jumped up a few grand (pandemic) soon after the sale as manufacturers stopped building new ones. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Personally I'd imagine a private sale /autotrader type listing would give you a lot more than motorway and WBAC would... Purely because they would need to make a profit from selling on themselves. But I guess the online companies make it easy and less effort?

I haven't tried it, but I'll be interested in understanding more later next year tbf.

I have never quite got the ‘can’t be bothered’ attitude to car selling. Each to their own etc etc, but it just seems a very easy way to throw money away.

I spend a full day cleaning, washing, polishing, vacuuming etc to get the car as good as can be without costing any more than say £50 at most. Then advertise wherever , Marketplace is free (but full of time wasters) or pay for an ad to get a better audience. I reckon I have got at least 10% more than by trading in or going to a buying franchise.

Five grand car that is £500 ish, or a grand or more perhaps on a more expensive beast. If more than about £10k then yeah, trade it in (maybe not applicable here). Personally I have never had a job that paid over a grand after tax per day.

I sold to WBAC, really good service although as others have said they may offer you less than online once seen, i tried selling privately but it was hassle, i even had a guy wanting to pay me more but with instalments

WBAC only offered £100.10 for my lovely mistreated , never missed a beat VW Golf Tip run car. Obviously said no , new set of tyres on it cost more than that less than 1000 miles ago. Second offer was £240. Declined that too and walked away.
