[Cricket] Cricket- 3rd Test, Oval, September 6th-10th, 2024, Sri Lanka tour of England

Just got back. The light rules are bizarre. I accept they take a reading and stick to it all test, but it was perfectly light when they went off. Sri Lanka were very clearly not struggling to see the ball, what with them despatching it to the boundary with relative ease.

SL played well today. England did not.

Surely there should be a standard light level agreed for all matches not the current adhoc system.

Going to have to bowl a lot better today to stand half a chance.

I think this was discussed at some point on TMS and the issue with that is that bad light in one country is different to another

Just looked on the Oval website, cheapest tickets for an adult today £75?? Absolutely scandalous for what is likely to be at best a third of a days play.
So will be fairly empty apart from those who pre-bought tickets.

You know what? I’m pleased England lost that. They deserved to, well played Sri Lanka.

I hope this team learns. They’ve needed a wake up call. Harry Brook’s first innings knock was a disgrace, frankly. He has all the talent in the world, he needs to learn to build an innings. There are a lot of positive signs for England this summer; Atkinson, Bashir, Smith in particular. But if this defeat means at a crucial moment next summer against India, or the following winter in Australia, they make a better decision then great.

That's where I am.

I though there was some arrogance in that England performance, arrogance in the selection as well.

Too many people in English cricket taking the game and supporters and test match cricket itself for granted.

And on the light. I was there on friday. Pope and Duckett had been playing very nicely, the light stays exactly the same as far as I could tell, they get taken off? Why? I got 41 overs in for my very very expensive ticket.

The entire Test Match was completed in only 200 overs. If there had been no light problems or rain delays, this Test would have been completed by 12.30pm on day three. That is a really cavalier way to lose a Test Match.

Well, yes especially when you've had a good first day

As Joe Root said after the match 'even Coldplay can't be number one every week. Overall a fantastic summer for England.

I see Dan Lawrence has been dropped from the squad for the Pakistan series.

Seemingly inevitable result of opening in the last series, which literally nobody thought he was equipped to do. If there's other batters they'd rather have in the squad, why weren't they asked to open? Or even pick an actual opener? Three of the top 5 run scorers in Division 1 are openers averaging over 50 this season. Even if they don't fit the wider plan and playing style, that has to be a better option than sawing off the career of a player who they presumably have liked the look of.

I also see they've picked Carse, who'd have been an infinitely more logical pick for the last match than Hull rather than having Woakes at 7 and two number 11s.

Way too much common sense, there. Much more important to put full faith in the BRAND.

Is Tom Hartley injured? Because, if not.....

What on earth did Hull do to make the tour (three wickets, dropped dolly and 9 runs on top of a few first class matches with a 60ish bowling average)? Does picking Carse mean Hull's there to make the tea? And Woakes is going even though everyone knows he's USELESS away from home.

I'm confused.

Yes, another who feels the same way. If that had been Australia, or even India, I would be mightily pissed off, but Sri Lanka? Good on them. And that isn't patronising, it's recognising that Test cricket can't just be a few big nations endlessly playing each other.

Plus they deserved it anyway. They played well and England's performance, certainly the batting, veered between misplaced arrogance and pure crap.

We were crap of course in the last test.

But i'm also prepared to admit that the cupboard might just be a little bare at the moment. Sure when everyone is fit and focussed we do actually have a competitive side with anyone, but 3 or 4 injuries means we're bringing in players with crap records and betting convictions.

I reckon we'll seriously regret binning off Anderson

I think Hull was always going. I don't particularly mind that in itself, a tour with the other England bowlers and coaches in different conditions should do him good even if he doesn't play (God knows, I hope he doesn't).

Hartley's taken 4 wickets at 77 this season. A wittier man than I might suggest they're surprised he didn't play in the last test.

For comparison, Leach is on 26 wickets at 31, which is fairly respectable if not earth moving. At this point I'd like to invite guesses as to the English spinner with the most wickets in Division 1 this season so far, with 42 at 24.4. :jester::lolol:

I didn't realise he'd been THAT bad this season so thanks for the stats. I was more meaning he'd be a typical Bazball selection to bring back to an Asian tour where his record is somewhat better than 4 at 77.

There's honestly so much I don't understand. Dan Lawrence. Playing then dropping Hartley. Putting in Hull when there are players with better claims.

But then I'd have picked Foakes ahead of Smith which, in hindsight, would have been wrong.
