I work with Toby's dad, who will be a very proud father this evening. Toby would have made his Man United debut some time ago, but he had a serious injury last season which ruled him out for months.
Ah great - did his move go to a tribunal, or did the clubs agree a deal?

Toby Collyers wiki profile makes me lol at this specific second in time (this prob happens a lot during footy games but..)

"came on against Liverpool to replace Casimero who never played for United again" 😂😂😂 sake
He probably wishes that he had stayed with a Top 6 team. Poor lad having to play with that dross!

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to this. Rather amusingly, his dad doesn't particularly like football and I've not been instrusive enough to ask directly. I think I (we) would have heard about it if it had gone to tribunal, though. Most likely another 'undisclosed fee' that TB is so fond of.

Yes indeed, good luck to him.

The pathway to a midfield place in the Albion team looks like a potentially rocky road. Leaving aside Biss (who presumably wil be gone) and Gross and Lallana who will likely be playing less (and not forgetting established under 23s like Leonard, Jenks, Spong, etc.) next season we'll be having Mac Allister, Moder, Mwepu, Alzate, Caicedo and possibly Kozlowski fighting over two or three midfield places.
Nice to be well-stocked - but we'll need to be careful we don't lose full internationals like Alzate and Mac if they don't feel they're getting enough game time.
So of all these players ahead of him in the midfield queue, two years later all we have is Moder on the outside looking in and a couple still out on loan.

Just goes to show how transient teams are and how quickly things change - and a salient lesson that if you're good enough a place will open for you.

We agreed a deal. Even let him go on trial with them if I recall correctly.
You make it sound like we were more than happy for him to move on.

I doubt very much that was the case. But if a young player is determined to move, there isn't a whole lot the club can do.

I thought he looked absolutely fantastic, comfortable playing passes with either foot and great energy to get about the pitch. He was bursting forward and covered a lot of ground - there's a lot to his game and I feel pretty confident that he's going to get plenty of game time this season. Last season, Ten Hag mentioned a young lad who was injured for the start of the season but had been factored into the planning for the season - that was Kobbie Mainoo. This season they've allowed the sale of Scott McTominay because they know they've got Collyer ready to come into the team.

I think it's a massive shame he left us, because I feel like he'd have played first team football last season and potentially could have been a big sale in the summer or be a first choice pick for this season. It feels like he's one who got away.

I don't know the ins and outs of it but it looks like United did everything by the book and fairly, which seems like it was appreciated by us.

Suggestion here that he was more moved on than poached?
No detail, but I can only imagine it was not to do with his ability as a player.

Does Mark Beard have an axe to grind?

".........and he didn’t deserve the treatment he got at Brighton in the end."

Wonder WTF that's all about.

Yeah, I am annoyed at Mark Beard for that, as much for the player as for the club.
It highlights that there was an issue that the club felt was bad enough to let him go over, even if Mark Beard felt it was a harsh way to deal with whatever happened. It’s clear it wasn't a case of not being deemed good enough, or that he was poached.

I remember the rumours circling that Man U were interested, then Collyer didn't play at all for a long time, and then the move was confirmed I think in the summer.

Perhaps it was the freezing out? But no inside knowledge here.

The article states that he had to get over the disappointment of being let go by Brighton, Man Utd were surprised to get the opportunity to sign him, as he was well regarded in his age group, everyone wanted to sign him, and that he was warned off going to Tottenham or Chelsea, as lower chance of breaking into the first team.
That makes it sound like he was forced into looking for somewhere else to be, for non footballing reasons, rather than Man Utd seducing him away.

"Didn’t deserve the treatment he got at Brighton" sounds like something more than just "being let go", however disappointing that may have been. Ultimately though, I expect it will be another of Brighton's favourite transfers - "undisclosed", and that'll be it, and that's all we'll ever know!

From what I've heard Collyer was refusing to agree a new deal with the club, despite us putting a decent contract on the table for him. As he wasn't willing to sign we didn't play him for most of that last season he was with us. I think that is what is being alluded to when they talk about how he was treated.

I have no idea what went on but it is really quite bizarre.

He was a 1st-year scholar in 2020-21 but signed a professional contract during that season (as evidenced by the PL retained list at the end of the campaign). He couldn't have signed before Jan 3 2021 as you can't register a player as a professional before his 17th birthday.

However, he played the first half of the U-18s' second game of the following season - and that was that. He never featured again and when the Premier League Squad Listing was published in February 2022 he was no longer shown as being registered with Albion.

Given that he was very highly-rated (he had featured for the U-18s when he was still an U-15 schoolboy and he had played 8 times for the England U-16s in 2019-20 and was called up by the England U-17s in October 2020), and that he was already on a professional contract - it is difficult to make much sense out of the situation.
