It is possible to walk around Beachy Head lighthouse. My friend and I did it 6 years ago. The event is organised by Eastbourne Rotary Club. The tide only cooperates for about one day a year. They charge each participant, thus raising funds for charity.

The walk is quite demanding. Lots of slippery, treacherous rocks to clamber over. I’d highly recommend it. I felt elated when I finished it, without ending up in the local I.C.U.

It's low tide twice a day so you can walk to it anytime (although in the rain it might be a bit slippery).

As far as I know, It's only on a couple of days a year that the tide is sufficiently far out for this walk to be done at a relatively leisurely pace. I wouldn't want to chance it unless the walk were responsibly supervised. Not at my time of life !

Neap tides. Twice a month.

When there is a low tide, the Moon faces the Earth at a right angle to the Sun so the gravitational force of the Moon and Sun work against each other. These tides are referred to as neap tides; a low tide or one that is lower than average. A neap tide happens between two spring tides and occurs twice a month when the first and last quarter Moon appears.

Made for an interesting Sunday morning Google - my first thought was, 'What lighthouse? It was a lightship' - which of course it was when I was a lad growing up in East Sussex in the 50s. The lighthouse was only built in 1971, years after the family had moved away from the area. I thought all lighthouses were redundant now, replaced by Sat-Nav and Geo-whatsit positioning - but apparently not so - Trinity House are upgrading Beachy Head to compensate for the absence of Royal Sovereign. You live and learn!

Aren't lighthouses brilliant. They've got this spinning thing on top that makes it look like the light is spinning, but it isn't. And to make it brighter they've got this glass called a lens or summit. Brilliant!

My favourite lighthouse is the one on top of Lundy (which is 3-400 ft about sea level). When it was being built, the locals told them they were building it in the wrong place. When it was finished and working it was shrouded in fog for dozens of days every year and so useless. It was quickly replaced by 2 sea-level lighthouses at each end of the island. You're free to go up the old one and there are a couple of deckchairs in the lamphouse for visitors to use. Fabulous spot on a clear day.

My favourites are the two at Dungeness where they built one then had to build a bigger one as the shore moves further away from the old lighthouse
